Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

Under supervision, in an assigned area, provides access control and patrols District buildings, grounds and property; carries a firearm and exercises judgment and discretion in dealing with emergencies and security violations encountered.

• Patrols assigned areas on foot or in motor vehicle, ensuring facilities are secure and remaining alert for unusual or suspicious circumstances or criminal activity. Determines whether first response should be to intervene directly, ask for assistance, keep situation under surveillance, or to report incident so that it can be handled by other authorities.
• Conducts security inspections. Responds to a variety of incidents, including criminal activity and motor vehicle violations. Enforces traffic and parking regulations. 
• Documents work through video footage when necessary and by completing various reports and records, such as gate records, patrol activity and OI (Offense/Incident) reports, arrest reports, accident reports, and court related forms.   
• Makes arrests as necessary. Carries out proper procedures and fills out necessary forms. Prepares and presents case in court as required. Coordinates and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies as appropriate.
• Investigates accidents and crimes.

• Monitors security and alarm equipment for entry or fire alarms. ·  
• Provides security at entrances to MWRD property, checking employees and visitors in. 
• Directs traffic on District property, and sets up barricades and other traffic controls as required for special activities. 
• Handles medical and fire emergencies, providing first aid as required and notifies appropriate agency.  
• Responds to service calls, assisting employees and citizens as possible.
• Assists with training of new or seasonal employees.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors.  May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system. Typical office environment.  May use standard office equipment, mobile phones, computers and cameras. Work is subject to video documentation and supervisory review.

• Considerable knowledge of Illinois driving rules and regulations. 
• Some knowledge of basic safety and first aid practices and procedures.
• Ability to receive training in and successfully pass the basic law enforcement training course required for certification as a Peace Officer in the State of Illinois.
• Ability to read and interpret written directives.
• Ability to retain and apply oral and written instructions.
• Ability to observe and evaluate security and other emergency situations and to take appropriate action with the exercise of good judgment and sound reasoning.
• Ability to enforce laws, rules and regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality.
• Ability to maintain logs and other security records and to prepare incident reports.
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
• Ability to use required technology (mobile phones, computers, cameras). 
• Ability to receive instruction in and successfully operate special radio equipment used in the Illinois State Police Emergency Radio Network, and computers for use in dedicated law enforcement data acquisition and retrieval systems.

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and two years (60 semester hours of credit) at an accredited college or university.  Possession of a valid driver's license.

Additional experience as a sworn law enforcement officer or as a member of the military police may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.
