Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

Under general direction, performs supervisory and administrative professional mechanical engineering work in directing the activities of a major work section of the District.

• Assigns, directs and reviews work; enforces guidelines and District policy; administers grievances; recommends actions determining employee status such as hiring, transfer, promotion or discharge.
• Plans, coordinates, administers and reviews ongoing engineering maintenance work in connection with water reclamation plants and outlying facilities including machinery, pumps, blowers, controls, piping, boilers, and centrifuges; establishes plant maintenance and resource alteration goals; ensures compliance with permits and regulations.
• Reviews and prepares engineering and economic studies relative to the mechanical engineering aspects of the plant; initiates and directs the testing and evaluation of new equipment and processes.
• Supervises the preparation of designs, estimates, plans and specifications for mechanical work in connection with pumping stations and water reclamation plants.
• Schedules and coordinates the preparation of contract drawings and specifications; supervises and participates in the preparation of construction contract correspondence, technical reports and other pertinent correspondence.
• Prepares and administers the Mechanical Engineering Section budget.
• Confers with and advises division and other section heads regarding mechanical design, development, and construction and operating problems; coordinates with other departments to develop plant changes and alterations.
• Supervises the maintenance of the plant information management system.

Typical office environment.  May use standard office equipment and computer terminals.  May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors.  May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

• Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of mechanical engineering.
• Extensive knowledge of the technical application of mechanics, thermodynamics and related engineering sciences to problems of heating, ventilating and plumbing.
• Thorough knowledge of the administrative principles involved in directing the work of professional and sub professional engineers.
• Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of wastewater engineering.
• Thorough knowledge of recent developments, current literature and sources of information in mechanical engineering.
• Ability to prepare and check plans and specifications for the installation of mechanical equipment and facilities.
• Ability to develop detailed specifications, reports and designs from general outline assignments.
• Ability to criticize and evaluate professional mechanical engineering design work.
• Ability to use personal computers in applications including spreadsheets, databases and word processing.
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois.

Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in mechanical engineering and eight years of  full-time, post-degree mechanical engineering experience.  Four years of this experience must have been in work related to the District's activities, three years of this experience must have been in the supervision of degreed engineers and one year must have been in an administrative capacity.

Full-time graduate study in mechanical engineering may be substituted for the required non-specialized experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.

• One year of service with the District as a Principal Mechanical Engineer; or possession of a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and one year of service with the District as a Principal Engineer, Principal Civil Engineer, Principal Electrical Engineer, or Principal Structural Engineer.
• Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
