Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

Under general supervision, performs professional structural engineering work of unusual difficulty.  As Assistant Head of Structural Design Section, supervises the design and making of detailed plans, estimates and specifications for the erection and alteration of steel, timber, concrete and reinforced concrete structures.

• Assigns, coordinates, supervises and reviews work of subordinate personnel; rewards, disciplines, directs or adjusts grievances of other employees or effectively recommends their hiring, transfer, suspension, layoff, recall, promotion or discharge. 
• Prepares cost justification/comparison analysis of alternate plans and makes recommendations. 
• Oversees and prepares cost estimates for structural components of projects.
• Prepares project authorization requests and design criteria documents for structural components of projects; coordinates the parameters with other sections.
• Communicates and attends meetings with staff members from other departments and sections, consultants, contractors, and vendors; reviews submittals including structural calculations, drawings, and technical data.
• Acts as or represents Section Head in absence of Managing Structural Engineer.

• Inspects structures for defects, deterioration, and safety; makes recommendations for necessary repairs.
• Initiates and responds to correspondence from contractors as well as other sections during design and construction phases of projects.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical office environment.  May use standard office equipment and computer terminals.

• Extensive knowledge of professional structural engineering fundamentals as they apply to the construction, operation, rehabilitation, repair and maintenance of sewage treatment plant facilities, sewage collection systems and flood control systems.
• Extensive knowledge of structural design principles.
• Thorough knowledge of the supervisory principles involved in directing professional and sub-professional engineers.  
• Thorough knowledge of recent developments, current literature and sources of information in structural engineering.
• Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of wastewater engineering. 
• Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of modern office management.
• Skill in performing structural calculations.
• Ability to criticize and evaluate professional structural engineering design work.
• Ability to develop detailed specifications, reports and designs from general outline assignments.
• Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
• Ability to solve unusual and complex problems through the adaptation of existing principles and policies.
• Ability to understand and interpret details of structural engineering design criteria and specifications.

Registration as a Structural Engineer in the State of Illinois.

Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in civil or structural engineering and six years of full-time, post-degree structural engineering experience.  Four years of this experience must have been in work related to the District's activities and one year of experience must have been in the supervision of degreed engineers.

Full-time graduate study in structural engineering may be substituted for the required non-supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.

• One year of service with the District as a Senior Civil Engineer or Senior Structural Engineer; or possession of a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering and one year of service with the District as a Senior Engineer.
• Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
