General Statement

Under supervision, performs skilled manual work in connection with the construction, alteration and repair of structures or articles of wood or wood substitute material.

  • Under supervision, performs skilled manual work in the construction, alteration and repair of wood structures, trestles, scaffolding, towers, forms for concrete construction, and fences.
  • Fabricates and installs wooden sludge collector flights and skimmer flights in settling and skimming tanks; replaces steel or plastic wear shoes on flights.
  • Builds, rebuilds or repairs wooden bridging and guard rails; performs interior construction including framing, drywall, trim work, suspended ceilings, doors and frames.
  • Lays out work and marks, saws, cuts, shapes, planes, miters, sands,  scrapes, finishes, fits and assembles work in accordance with plans, sketches or instructions.
  • Conducts work in a safe manner and in accordance with established safety rules and practices.

Other Job Functions

  • Makes repairs to wooden desks, tables, chairs and other office furniture and to truck bodies; installs all types of hardware, except on metal, in buildings.
  • Is responsible for the custody and care of all tools of the trade in performing carpentry work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors.  May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the carpentry trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of the types, uses and adaptabilities of various woods.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to work from sketches and blueprints and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment of carpentry.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and completion of an approved apprentice training program in carpentry, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Substitution

Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
