General Statement

Under supervision, performs skilled manual work in connection with the assembly, erection and repair of architectural metal work in buildings or other structures and directs the work of assigned journeymen and helpers.

  • Performs first-line supervision of assigned Architectural and/or Structural Ironworkers performing skilled manual work in the assembly, erection, fabrication and repair of architectural metal work for buildings, window casings, locks and door checks on steel doors, cornices, stairways, platforms, railings, floor gratings, lockers, bins, partitions and fences.
  • Participates in planning the work of assigned Architectural and/or Structural Ironworkers.
  • Checks work progress and gives instructions and training in job duties and safety practices.
  • Drills, rivets, reams, fits and assembles architectural metalwork according to plans, specifications or other instructions.
  • Interprets rough sketches used for shop fabrication of architectural metal work.
  • Fabricates architectural metal work in the shop using appropriate machines and tools.
  • Loads and unloads architectural metal work and materials.
  • Erects and dismantles portable scaffolding or rigging required in the work.
  • Welds or cuts a variety of steel and aluminum shapes and structures by gas or electric process, power saws, or other means.
  • Requisitions tools, equipment, supplies and/or materials from the storeroom.
  • Conducts work in a safe manner and in accordance with established safety rules and practices.

Other Job Functions

  • Is responsible for the custody and care of all tools of the trade in performing architectural ironwork.
  • Reviews and codes timesheets, electronic time off requests and maintains vacation schedules online.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors.  May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of architectural ironworking.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Skill in the use and care of the tools, machines and equipment of the trade.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
  • Ability to work from sketches, blueprints and specifications.
  • Ability to do oxyacetylene and electric arc welding.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and two years of experience as a Journeyman Architectural Ironworker, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Substitution

Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Promotional Requirement

  • One year of service with the District as an Architectural Ironworker or Structural Ironworker.
  • Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
