Structural Ironworker (#20005973)

General Statement

Under supervision, performs skilled manual work in connection with the assembly, fabrication, erection, alteration and repair of structural steel work in the field and in the shop.

Essential Job Functions

  • Erects steel columns, beams, girders, trusses and other structural steel members on bridges, buildings and other structures.
  • Drills, reams, bolts, fits and lays out structural steel according to plans, specifications, accepted standards or other instructions.
  • Operates machinery necessary in the fabrication process of structural steel parts according to plans, specifications or other instructions.
  • Welds or cuts a variety of steel by gas or electric process, power saws, or other means.
  • Rigs or erects equipment and machinery for handling structural members such as cranes.
  • Conducts work in a safe manner and in accordance with established safety rules and practices.
  • Erects and dismantles portable scaffolding and rigging required in the work.

Other Job Functions

  • Is responsible for the custody and care of all tools of the trade in performing structural ironwork.
  • Interprets rough sketches for shop fabrication of structural steel members.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors.  May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Skill in the use and care of the tools, machines and equipment of the trade.
  • Ability to work from sketches, plans and specifications.
  • Ability to do oxyacetylene and electric arc welding.

 

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and completion of an approved apprentice training program in structural ironwork, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Substitution

Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
