General Statement

Under general supervision, is responsible for all ironwork activities involved in the assembly, erection, repair or alteration of structural steel and architectural metal work throughout the District.

  • Supervises ironworker activities throughout the District; plans and schedules projects; gives advice and instructions regarding work in process; inspects jobs in progress and upon completion to make sure that instructions and work schedules are followed.
  • Supervises the work of Structural Ironworker/Architectural Ironworker Leadman and Structural/Architectural Ironworkers.
  • Cooperates with other supervisory personnel in order to coordinate ironworker activities with other operating and maintenance work.
  • Is responsible for the proper use and care of tools, equipment and materials used in connection with the ironworker trades.
  • Checks adherence to safety rules and practices; administers first aid in case of injury and secures prompt medical attention when necessary.
  • Studies and interprets blueprints, sketches, written or verbal orders.
  • Requisitions tools, equipment, supplies, and/or materials from the storeroom.

Other Job Functions

  • Consults with other District personnel to determine job requirements and schedules.
  • Performs any of the duties of ironworkers as required.
  • Reviews and codes timesheets, electronic time off requests and maintains vacation schedules online.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of architectural and structural ironworking.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Skill in the use and care of the tools, machines and equipment of the trade.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work from sketches, plans and specifications.
  • Ability to do oxyacetylene and electric arc welding.
  • Ability to coordinate the work of several crews at different locations.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and three years of experience as a Structural or Architectural Ironworker.

Substitution

Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Promotional Requirement

  • One year of service with the District as an Architectural Ironworker Leadman or Structural Ironworker Leadman or two years of such experience as an Architectural Ironworker or Structural Ironworker.
  • Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
