Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

Under immediate supervision during an assigned shift, performs manual work assisting in the operation and maintenance of assigned equipment in a sewage treatment plant, pumping station or power plant.

• Assists in the operation, regulation, repair and lubrication of assigned mechanical equipment within a water reclamation complex and/or pumping station.
• Lubricates plant mechanical equipment, i.e. pumps, blowers, fans, valves, sluice gates, coarse/fine screens, conveyors, centrifuges, and linkages. Inspects requirements for lubrication, changing filters, and greasing, as instructed.
• Observes operating conditions of equipment; makes minor adjustments and repairs. Reports unusual operation conditions and repair requirements to his/her supervisor. Opens and closes various sizes of valves as instructed.
• Reads and records meter, gauge and chart readings; changes meter charts and keeps operating records.

• Transports lubricants and equipment to various locations within a water reclamation plant and pumping station.
• Cleans assigned equipment and work areas and performs other routine housekeeping duties as instructed.
• Flushes out and replaces oil and collects oil and/or water samples from final tanks as directed.
• Properly fills and maintains containers of lubricants.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical duties involve exposure to industrial equipment or operations including working near operating mechanical equipment and loud noise. Duties may also involve working in close proximity to or in conjunction with construction activities. Work may be performed in a variety of weather conditions and may involve working in confined spaces or at heights. Duties could include contact with hazardous or toxic materials and exposure to noxious odors. Some positions require the operation of a District vehicle.

• Some knowledge of the operating and maintenance requirements of high pressure stationary boilers.
• Some knowledge of the lubrication requirements of pumps, blowers, fans and similar equipment.
• Some knowledge of the tools, methods and practices used in lubricating and maintaining boilers and their auxiliaries.
• Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work, including those associated with boilers, high pressure steam lines and valves.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to read and record a variety of meters, gauges and charts.

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and two years of experience in engine or boiler room operating work.

Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

• One year of service with the District as a Turbine Laborer or as a Maintenance Laborer A.
• Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
