Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

Under general supervision, supervises the performance of skilled tasks in the installation and maintenance of electrical circuits, apparatus, machinery and equipment.

• Performs first-line supervision of assigned Electrical Mechanics and Electrical Mechanic Sub-Foremen. Plans, schedules, directs and inspects the work of subordinates according to the approved instructions, standards, plans and specifications of the job.
• Makes estimates of material and labor required to complete work assignments, requisitions material, supplies, tools and equipment required for the work and maintains accurate records of time spent on jobs.
• Ensures shop equipment is up-to-date with current technology and in good working condition, either by recommending purchase of new equipment, or facilitating repair and certification of existing equipment.
• Oversees a safe, efficient repair shop utilizing good housekeeping procedures.

• Is responsible for the custody and care of all tools and equipment used in performing electrical mechanic work.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical duties involve exposure to industrial equipment or operations including working near operating mechanical equipment and loud noise. Duties may also involve working in close proximity to or in conjunction with construction activities. Work may be performed in a variety of weather conditions and may involve working in confined spaces or at heights. Duties could include contact with hazardous or toxic materials and exposure to noxious odors.

• Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of the electrical trade.
• Considerable knowledge of the national electrical code and other relevant codes and regulations.
• Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
• Skill in the use and care of the equipment and tools of the trade.
• Skill in the operation of computers necessary to plan, schedule, and coordinate work at several work locations, and perform record keeping, and communication reports in a manner conducive to the best possible use of District resources.
• Ability to plan, lay out, install and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus and control equipment.
• Ability to make electrical repairs to motor vehicles.
• Ability to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate well orally and in writing in the dissemination of information and instructions.

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and four years of journeyman-level experience in the electrical trade or two years as a sub-foreman in that trade.

Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

• One year of service with the District as an Electrical Mechanic Sub-Foreman or two years of service as an Electrical Mechanic.
• Civil service status in one of the foregoing classes.
