General Statement

Under supervision, performs skilled manual work in connection with the operation of precision machine tools used in fabricating metal parts.  Installs, repairs and maintains mechanical equipment in the shop and in the field.

  • Performs skilled work in connection with the operation of precision machine tools used in fabricating metal parts, and installing, repairing and maintaining mechanical equipment.
  • Sets up, adjusts and operates precision machine tools which may include lathes, planers, milling machines, shapers, drill presses, grinders and other standard metal working machines.
  • Welds, presses, cuts, forms, shapes, laps, bores, turns, bends, finishes, fits and performs other bench, machine or hand tool operations required in the fabrication, installation and repair of metal parts.
  • Installs, tears down, inspects, repairs, replaces parts, reassembles, adjusts and generally maintains all classes of machinery and machine parts.
  • Conducts work in a safe manner and in accordance with established safety rules and practices.

Other Job Functions

  • Using cables, slings, ropes and chains, or other means, rigs heavy parts and machinery for removal and installation.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs gasoline and diesel engines, and performs other repairs on trucks, automobiles and heavy mobile equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors.  May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the machining and welding properties of metals.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, tools and equipment of the machinist trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Skill in the use and care of the tools, machines and equipment of the machinist trade.
  • Ability to work from sketches and broken parts.
  • Ability to do oxyacetylene and electric arc welding.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and completion of an approved apprentice training program in machining, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Substitution

Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
