General Statement

Under general supervision, has charge of the operation of precision machine tools used in fabricating metal parts and the installation, inspection, repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment in the shop.

  • Supervises assigned machinists and leadmen; plans and schedules projects; gives advice and instructions regarding work in progress; inspects jobs in progress and upon completion to make sure that instructions are followed.
  • Cooperates with engineers and other supervisory personnel in order to coordinate machinist activities with operating and maintenance work.
  • Is responsible for the proper use and care of tools, equipment and materials used in connection with machinist work in the shop or field.
  • Is vigilant in preventing accidents or injury to subordinates or others in vicinity of jobs; checks adherence to safety rules and practices; administers first aid in case of injury and secures prompt medical attention when necessary.
  • Studies and interprets blueprints, sketches, written or verbal orders, or other means of direction.  Devises methods of performing difficult, special and unusual machine work.

Other Job Functions

  • Consults with other District personnel to determine job requirements and schedules.
  • Performs any of the duties of a Machinist as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors.  May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of the machining and welding properties of metals.
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, tools and equipment of the machinist trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Skill in the use and care of the tools, machines and equipment of the machinist trade.
  • Ability to work from sketches and broken parts.
  • Ability to do oxyacetylene and electric arc welding.
  • Ability to schedule, coordinate and supervise work at several different locations.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Two years of experience as a journeyman machinist.

Promotional Requirement

  • One year of service with the District as a Machinist Leadman or two years of service as a Machinist.
  • Civil service status in one of the foregoing classes.
