General Statement
Under direction, coordinates and directs the repair, maintenance and installation of mechanical equipment and the repair and alteration of structures at the North or Calumet area sewage treatment and disposal plants, pumping plants and related facilities or assists in these duties at the West-Southwest area plants.

- Participates with plant engineering personnel in coordinating and directing installation, maintenance and repair work; and performs on-site work direction and coordination of emergency repairs involving multiple trades’ disciplines.
- Directs and coordinates the inspection of equipment and facilities, and analyzes the operating condition of water reclamation plants, pumping stations and related facilities and equipment, determining and proposing maintenance and repair requirements; investigates equipment failures to determine causes and to take necessary corrective steps.
- Assigns jobs to skilled trades foremen, leadmen or journeymen; establishes methods to be used and ensures adherence to established safety standards and rules.
- Assists in the performance of all administrative functions of a Plant Maintenance Section, including: budget preparation; purchasing of materials, equipment, and services; personnel administration, including timekeeping, disciplinary action, enforcement of Collective Bargaining agreements, and Performance Management; and section office management.
- Inspects all work in progress on a daily basis throughout the plant and affected areas.
- Establishes methods for carrying out maintenance and repair work, and coordinates and directs the repair, maintenance and installation of mechanical equipment and the repair and alteration of structures at the Calumet and Northside Water Reclamation Plants.
Other Job Functions
- Issues requisitions for tools, equipment and materials required for job; follows up on delivery to job sites; inspects new tools, equipment and materials; and arranges for inter-plant shipment of materials and supplies.
- Directs the general supervision of shop, storage and garage facilities.
- Directs the maintenance of records for all repairs, alterations and replacements of equipment, including all general and shop drawings for use in work at plant area.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Environmental Conditions
May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the building, metal working, mechanical and allied trades.
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of effective supervision.
- Some knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of modern office management.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans and specifications.
- Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
- Ability to schedule and coordinate work at several different locations.
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and ten years of experience in large scale industrial or plant maintenance work involving inspection and repair of plant structural, process and mechanical equipment, of which five years must have been in a supervisory capacity and three years must have involved direct responsibility for coordinating the activities of multiple trade groups.
Substitution
Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis. College or other post high school study related to industrial or plant maintenance work may be substituted for the required non-supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of four years.
Promotional Requirement
- One year of service with the District as an Assistant Master Mechanic.
- Civil service status as an Assistant Master Mechanic.
