MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.
Paid Interns
Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $15.00 per hour. They do not receive benefits or paid days off.

Description:
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is in search of a current college student seeking an internship opportunity in the Monitoring & Research Department’s Industrial Waste Division.The intern will work with technical staff to learn about wastewater management and regulation. They will learn about the issuance of wastewater discharge permits, reviewing spill prevention plans, flow measurement proposals, and wastewater monitoring reports to assist in the interpretation and administration of the Sewage and Waste Control, User Charge, Resource Recovery, and Environmental Remediation Wastewater ordinances. The intern would gain experience classifying industrial users, enforcing local and general wastewater pollutant standards, conducting site inspections, and preparing assignment responses. By the conclusion of this experience, the intern should be able to articulate how the work of our environmental scientists plays a critical role in the preservation of our water environment and how it furthers the mission of the District.
Rate of Pay:
This is a paid internship at $15.00/hr.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
Applicants must have a current residence in Cook County, IL; be a citizen or national of the U.S., an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence, or an individual otherwise legally authorized to work in the U.S.; and must obtain a referral letter from current school, class instructor or Internship Coordinator.
Applicants should have strong analytical and computation skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills are also preferred.
Educational Requirements:
Applicants must be a current graduate or undergraduate student seeking a degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, biology, chemistry or other related discipline.
