Introduction

MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.

Paid Interns

Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour.

Required Documents: 

  • Letter of recommendation from a class instructor, professor, or Internship Coordinator from current school or university.
  • Cover letter stating interest in position.
  • Resume.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university and will be enrolled in the 2024/2025 school year.
  • Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
  • You must be a citizen or national of the United States, or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.

Description:

The Finance Department of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (the District) is seeking an intern. As a member of the accounting team, the intern will gain valuable experience in Accounts Payable, Billing or Payroll while helping the District achieve some of its objectives: processing its financial transactions and receipts, vendor and employee obligations. 

In addition to transaction processing, the intern will have opportunities to make an impact through special projects and further apply concepts that are covered in a classroom setting. The intern will also acquire practical insight into governmental financial accounting and reporting and the rules and regulations they must follow. 

Intern responsibilities may include:

  • Assist in analyzing and processing the District's daily revenue receipts and invoices.
  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of various standard and ad hoc accounting and financial reports using various software, maintain and monitor accounting and financial records, books, and databases.
  • File and retrieve documents and reports.
  • Review and process invoices using the SAP ERP system and Readsoft software
  • Communicate with internal and external end users to respond to inquiries and resolve issues.
  • Assist with reviewing time entry reports for discrepancies, adjustments, and confirming holiday rules are followed.
  • Assist in reviewing payroll reports for correct earnings, proper taxes and pension type for new hires, and master data discrepancies.
  • Review and process jury duty recoveries, military pay adjustments, garnishment entry and timesheet amendments.
  • Reconcile payroll accounts, tax reports, and quota balances.
  • Compute and enter quota and lost time adjustments.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles and procedures.
  • Ability to compile, analyze and summarize financial information.
  • Proficiency planning and organize work in an efficient manner.
  • Familiarity with standard office equipment such as a computer and printer.
  • Experience using business operating software (e.g., SAP, MS Excel, MS Outlook).

Educational Requirements:

Applicants must be enrolled in a 2-year or 4-year college program with an emphasis in Accounting or Finance.
