Position: Wildlife Biologist

Division:  Wildlife

Location:  TBD, Domicile to be approved by supervisor.

Salary:  $38,334.00/Yearly

Summary of Job Duties:
Under general supervision, participate in the development of both short and long range wildlife management and research projects.  Will be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the successful completion of assigned projects within predetermined guidelines.  Must be familiar with the principles and procedures of wildlife management and research.  Supervise both full time and temporary employees.  Accurately observe record and analyze scientific data and prepare and submit detailed reports.  Serve as advisor or Department representative in areas of special expertise.  May have extensive contact with a variety of public and private individuals and groups.  Provide technical assistance to private landowners with wildlife and habitat management recommendations and guidelines.  Conduct audio and visual wildlife surveys, day/night.  Plant food plots, mow, build/repair fences, road maintenance, and control or eliminate nuisance species.

Specific job responsibilities include: 
Serving as the Department’s liaison with all energy industries, companies and trade groups.  Work extensively and closely with all sectors of the energy industry to ensure that the needs of all wildlife species are identified and addressed as energy resources are explored and developed in Oklahoma.  Assist Oklahoma energy industry members in negotiation of agreements with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) for those companies pursuing actions that benefit the Lesser Prairie Chicken or other species at appropriate scales of importance and in line with conservation objectives as determined by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.
Must have the ability to:
• Operate boats, motor vehicles, tractors, trucks, lawn mowers, and ATVs, with various attachments.
• Operate and use firearms, cutting torch, welding equipment, and fire suppressing equipment. 
• Lift, carry and use fencing, and building material, hand tools, chain saw.
• Walk and jog over rough terrain for extended periods and swim.
• Work extended hours, weekends, and stay overnight out of town.
• Endure various extremes of outdoor weather conditions.
• Lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds for a distance of 100 yards. (e.g. deer carcass, etc.)
• Handle wild animals in live and dead condition, including field dressing wild game.


Requires a Bachelor’s degree, or higher, in wildlife related field from an accredited college or university. 

Previous experience is not required.  Experience with GIS applications is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills (required):
• Principles, practices and techniques of wildlife management and of basic supervision principles.
• Understand basic farming operations and equipment use.
• Skill in exercising good judgment in analyzing situations and making decisions in collecting, evaluating and presenting information clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Must be able to work well with others.  Must work professionally and courteously with the public and other agencies.
• Be proficient in use of computers and various software applications.
