Located in the Environmental Complaints and Local Services Division, in the Duncan office.
Major Job Duties:
1. Provide environmental complaint response, investigation and resolution within an assigned geographic area.
2. Perform inspections at facilities permitted by the DEQ.
3. Perform all regulatory functions of the on-site sewage treatment program to include soil tests for system design, inspection of system installations, review of soil tests and inspections done by the private sector and issuance of authorizations for the construction of sewage treatment systems.
4. Provide technical service to citizens and municipalities with regard to water treatment, wastewater treatment, solid waste disposal and air pollution control.
Applicants wishing to apply for the Environmental Programs Specialist position in the Environmental Complaints & Local Services Division must meet the qualifications for a Registered Sanitarian and Environmental Specialist, which includes a Bachelors with a major in public health, environmental health, environmental science, physical science, natural science, biological science, agricultural science or equivalent from an accredited college or university with at least thirty (30) semester hours of work in physical, natural, and biological science, public health and/or environmental health. Positions require walking long distances over a variety of terrain such as loose gravel, slopes, excavated areas, climb ladders or stairs at construction sites, and working in extreme weather conditions. Must be able to carry up to 50 lbs. of equipment and spend long hours driving in an automobile.

Positions in this family are responsible for planning, supervising and performing technical and professional work in an environmental quality, environmental management or environmental health protection program. This includes performing inspections, surveys, and investigations, reviewing and approving federal grants, providing consultative services, and ensuring compliance with environmental laws. Specialty areas may include biology, health, geology, hydrology, and environmental science.
The Environmental Programs Specialist job family has four levels which are distinguished by the complexity of assignments, the level of expertise required to perform the duties assigned, and the responsibility for providing leadership to others.
This is the basic level of this job family where employees are assigned duties and responsibilities in a training status to build their skills in conducting investigations, performing basic professional analysis, and interpreting state and federal laws. In this role they will perform tasks involved in the evaluation of inspection and survey data, preparing technical records and reports, and assisting in making recommendations concerning remedial actions to correct environmental or water problems.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a bachelor’s degree with at least 24 semester hours in a physical, natural, or biological science, chemistry, geology, hydrology, physical geography, epidemiology, environmental science, environmental health or civil, agricultural, environmental, geological or chemical engineering.
