Accounts Payable Technician

DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the Accounts Payable Lead, this position is assigned responsibility in the maintenance, analysis, interpretation and management of financial accounting data and ensuring timely and accurate posting of accounts payable invoices and processing of checks in accordance with agency policy. This includes the preparation and posting of various vouchers, journals, ledger and accounts; analysis and presentation of financial data; review and approval of assigned funding, and other similar activities. The work must be performed with a high degree of attention to detail.

This position requires innovative thinking and an ability to consider outcomes rather than processes.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
• Analyze and process invoices.
• Provide guidance to coworkers and field staff for AP and other accounting related issues.
• Review purchasing requisitions for the proper setup, assignment of funding, and account coding.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of governmental accounting standards and demonstrated ability to perform highly independent work. Ability to independently analyze accounting data; knowledge of accounting ledgers and journals; knowledge of and ability to perform accounting functions using computer technology related to accounting systems. Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written.

Ability to use Microsoft Office Excel and Word at an intermediate level or above is required.

Experience with PeopleSoft/Oracle is preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate’s (2 year) degree in accounting, business, finance or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of professional accounting experience for each year of the required degree.
