To plan, organize, direct, and supervise the installation, repair, and maintenance of emergency equipment on vehicles and equipment assigned to the Sheriff’s Office; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility.
The Supervisor level recognizes positions that perform full, first-line supervisory responsibilities including planning, assigning, and evaluating the work of subordinates and are responsible for a program area within a work unit or department.
Receives general direction from a Sheriff’s Lieutenant.
Exercises direct supervision over technical personnel.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Recommend and assist in the implementation of unit goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for the upfitting of emergency vehicles and equipment assigned to the Sheriff’s Office; implement policies and procedures.
- Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of staff involved in the installation, repair, and maintenance of specialized Sheriff’s Office equipment, including, but not limited to, light bars, flashers, sirens, weapons storage, consoles, transport partitions, radios, speakers, and antennas, to modify vehicles to meet Sheriff’s Office specifications.
- Evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; coordinate and monitor workflow of an assigned work unit; recommend and implement improvements and modifications to assigned work unit.
- Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; submit justifications for equipment, fuel, supplies, and personnel; monitor and control expenditures.
- Participate in the selection of staff; provide or coordinate staff training; conduct performance evaluations; recommend discipline; implement discipline procedures as directed to maintain the efficient and professional operation of assigned work unit.
- Schedule vehicle and equipment service and repair activities, both internally and with outside vendors.
- Forecast vehicle replacements and associated costs; provide input on standards and specifications; coordinate with vendors and process change orders; accept deliveries and perform inspections.
- Initiate and track work orders; prepare records of work performed; generate and review reports from an automated maintenance management system for assigned work unit.
- Maintain communication with Command staff regarding the status of vehicles and equipment, personnel needs, and operational matters impacting upfitting activities.
- Oversee the work of staff performing routine maintenance and repair of vehicles.
- Oversee and maintain Sheriff’s Office fuel network.
- Participate in the work of staff as it relates to routine maintenance and repair of vehicles and the upfitting of vehicles and equipment.
- As directed, may represent the division to outside agencies, organizations, and vendors; provide technical assistance as necessary.
- Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, other County employees, supply vendors, and the public using principles of effective customer service.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Work is performed in a shop environment with varying temperature conditions and associated noises and odors, as well as in the field requiring travel to various locations throughout the County in a variety of outdoor weather conditions.

Experience:
Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience performing duties similar to a Sheriff’s Automotive Technician II with Placer County.
Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Required License or Certificate:
- May need to possess a valid driver’s license as required by the position. Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.
Length of Probation:
All permanent appointments to this classification shall serve a probationary period of twelve (12) calendar months or two thousand eighty (2,080) hours, whichever is more.
