To plan, organize, direct, and supervise an assigned building maintenance work unit; to coordinate work unit activities with other work units, sections, divisions, departments, and outside contractors; to provide technical support to supervisors and management; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
The Crew Supervisor level in the Building Crafts Mechanic series recognizes positions that perform full first-line supervision over an assigned crew or work unit, including planning, assigning, monitoring, and evaluating the work of subordinates, and are responsible for ensuring the success and effectiveness of crew projects and assignments.
This classification is distinguished from the Facilities Operations Supervisor in that the latter provides full second-line supervision to assigned staff and may spend more time in an office setting focused on administrative and planning functions that support operations.
Receives general direction from a Facilities Operations Supervisor and/or higher-level management staff.
Exercises direct supervision over assigned building maintenance and custodial staff.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Direct, supervise, and perform a variety of building crafts and maintenance functions requiring a high degree of skill and independent judgment, including general construction, electrical, painting, cabinet/furniture making and installation, metal fabrication, plumbing, air conditioning/refrigeration, heating, lock systems, sign making, flooring, roofing, fire alarm/sprinkler systems, environmental systems and controls, and other related building automation systems.
- Recommend and assist in the implementation of unit goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for building crafts, maintenance, and repair activities; implement policies and procedures.
- Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of staff involved in assigned building crafts, maintenance, and repair activities.
- Evaluate operations and activities of assigned work unit; coordinate and monitor workflow; recommend and implement improvements and modifications.
- Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; submit justifications for staffing, supplies, materials, and equipment; monitor and control expenditures.
- Participate in the selection of staff; provide or coordinate staff training; conduct performance evaluations; recommend discipline; implement discipline procedures as directed to maintain efficient and professional operations.
- Review the work of contractors; ensure work is completed according to contract specifications; report deviations and issues to assigned supervisor; administer the more routine contracts and service agreements.
- Assist with the development and monitoring of project tasks, costs, and timelines.
- Use automated maintenance management systems; create, schedule, and assign work orders.
- Maintain a preventative maintenance program for assigned work unit.
- Track and prepare records of work performed; generate and review reports from an automated maintenance management system; keep records and prepare reports and other documents as required.
- As directed, may represent the division to outside agencies, organizations, and contractors; provide technical assistance as necessary.
- Answer questions and provide information to the public, other County departments, and outside contractors; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary to resolve.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, other County employees, outside contractors, and the public using principles of effective customer service.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Work is performed in an indoor office environment with controlled temperature conditions and in the field requiring travel to various locations throughout the County in a variety of outdoor weather conditions.
Depending on area of assignment, additional background clearance with the Department of Justice (DOJ) may be required.
Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Two (2) years experience performing duties similar to a Senior Building Crafts Mechanic with Placer County.
Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by coursework in building trades, general construction management, project management, or a related field.
Required License or Certificate

May need to possess a valid driver's license as required by the position. Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.

Possession of appropriate required certification relative to specific area of building crafts assignment.
Length of Probation:
All permanent appointments to this classification shall serve a probationary period of twelve (12) calendar months or two thousand eighty (2,080) hours, whichever is more.
