To plan, organize, direct, supervise, and evaluate public health nursing activities and programs within the Public Health Nursing Division of the Health and Human Services Department; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
The Supervisor level recognizes positions that perform full, first-line supervisory responsibilities including planning, assigning, and evaluating the work of subordinates and is responsible for a program area within a work unit or department.
Receives general direction from assigned management staff.
Exercises direct supervision over assigned professional, clerical and technical staff.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Recommend and assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of measurable goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for public health nursing activities, programs, and services; and implement policies and procedures.

Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of staff involved in various public health nursing activities and programs.

Evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommend improvements and modifications; and prepare various reports on operations and activities using concepts of the nursing process, including assessment, planning, implement, and evaluation.

Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; submit justifications for various public health nursing activities and programs, including staff, equipment, materials, and supplies; and monitor and control expenditure.

Evaluate and assure quality of nursing practice and contribute to the professional growth of staff.

Participate in the selection of staff; provide or coordinate staff training; conduct performance evaluations; recommend discipline; and implement discipline procedures as directed.

Collaborate with other health care providers, professionals, and community representatives in assessing implementation and evaluation of programs for community health.

Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary to resolve.

Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other County employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.

Perform related duties as assigned.
Work is typically performed in an indoor office environment and controlled temperature conditions. Position may require travel to and from other locations in a variety of outdoor weather conditions.
Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in public health nursing.
Training: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in nursing.
Required License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

Possession of a valid certificate as a Certified Public Health Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

May need to possess a valid driver's license as required by the position. Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.
