DEFINITION

(Unclassified)

To learn to perform administrative, technical, and/or professional work in an assigned area by assisting in varied administrative assignments such as research, analysis, and report writing or routine technical and professional work. 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under close supervision, incumbents assist with administrative, specialized, professional, paraprofessional and/or technical activities. Positions vary in scope and the duties performed depend upon the assigned department.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives immediate supervision from higher level staff in subject area to which assigned.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist in a variety of administrative tasks within various County departments; provide research assistance; collect and analyze data, prepare correspondence and reports; may interview and consult with officials, employees, agency clients and other interested individuals or groups.
  • Perform routine work pertinent to the subject area to which assigned, such as general public administration, surveying, drafting and engineering, architecture, counseling, social and mental health services.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work may be performed in both an indoor office environment with controlled temperature conditions and/or outdoors in the field, requiring travel to various locations throughout the County in a variety of outdoor weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: No experience required.

Training: Enrollment in or recent graduation from an accredited college or university in the subject area or closely related subject area to which assigned. Recent graduates qualify for a student internship up to one (1) year after their graduation date. Some positions may require additional education in a specific course of study.

Required License or Certificate:
May need to possess a valid driver's license as required by the position. Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required. 

Special Qualifications:
Must be at least 16 years of age at the time of appointment. If under the age of 18, proof of age will be required at the time of employment. Acceptable proof of age documents include a California Employment Certificate/Work Permit, Age Certification, or driver's license.

Note:
Employment in this class is restricted to students enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited college with major coursework in a field appropriate to assigned duties. Employment in this class is temporary/extra help in nature and is designed to offer the student a practical learning experience. No full-time permanent appointments will be made in this class.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; arithmetic and basic mathematical calculations.
  • Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
  • Basic principles and practices used in the work of subject area to which assigned.

Ability to:

  • On a continuous basis, know and understand all aspects of assignment; observe safety rules; identify safety hazards; read, understand, identify, interpret, explain, apply, recall, and problem-solve related practices, policies, and procedures; recall and utilize a variety of information; manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and quickly switch between tasks; focus on a single task for long periods of time; work with frequent interruptions; work under time pressure and complete a high volume of tasks.
  • On a continuous basis, sit at a desk and/or stand at a counter or in meetings for long periods of time. Intermittently, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist to reach files and equipment surrounding desk and while performing work in the field; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; speak, use a telephone, write and use a keyboard to communicate or to enter/retrieve data from a computer; and see, hear, and smell with sufficient acuity to perform essential job functions: lift light to moderate weight depending on assignment.
  • Learn a variety of administrative and professional tasks.
  • Learn to prepare effective reports and make recommendations on assigned matters under study.
  • Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Length of Probation:
This classification serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority and has specific term and no right to continuous employment.
