Shipping Lead 

Job Description:

The Shipping Lead follows Shipping/Distribution Department procedures and performs specific duties based on the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) for the Shipping/Distribution Department

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Employee becomes knowledgeable of the applicable provisions of the Shipping/Distribution Department’s Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and follows them.

  • Employee remains knowledgeable on an ongoing and timely basis as changes in the SOPs and GMPs occur.

  • Employee has successfully passed all levels of the appropriate section’s Credentialed Training program where the proper operating knowledge, skills and experience are acquired to meet the high quality of proficiency expected as a shipping technician and shipping material handler.

  • Employee is at work as scheduled, starts work at the beginning of a shift, is on time to meetings, completes assigned tasks in a timely manner, and works overtime as required.

  • Employee knows and follows the Shipping/Distribution Department policies and procedures and Thorne Research policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.

  • Employee pays attention to detail. Employee completes paperwork accurately, neatly and fully.

  • Employee is capable of training shipping technicians and shipping material handlers in their job duties, and assumes the responsibility of trainer along with the Lead trainer/shipping tech and Shipping Manager.

  • Employee gets along with co-workers, managers and supervisors. Employee responds appropriately to criticism and instructions from supervisors.

  • Employee follows the Standards of Conduct as outlined in the latest version of the Thorne Research Employee Handbook.

  • Assist Shipping Manager in conducting formal and informal performance assessments of staff, including performance versus expectations and goals, behaviors and leadership potential, and seek the same for self.

  • Actively participate in required training and development programs and electives as suit one’s needs, and support colleagues, trainers, and management as appropriate with these efforts.

  • Promote the Company’s Mission and Values, including an accountable, innovative, and results-oriented culture that promotes customer service, openness, teamwork, mutual trust, and respect.

  • Lead Area Duties

    • Demonstrates the ability to provide ongoing written and oral direction and clarity to shipping technicians and shipping material handlers.

    • Ensures all shipping/distribution employees are trained in SOP’s and that they are properly followed.

    • Keeps Shipping Manager updated daily on personnel, shipping goals, quality, and equipment.

    • Assists in the timely completion of performance appraisals for department personnel.

    • Leads and supervises in the quick set up of all phases of assigned area for smooth operation and maximum output.

    • Notifies the Shipping Manager of any problems that affect output.

    • Has sufficient knowledge of the area and equipment being operated to make adjustments, without supervision, within guidelines outlined in the applicable SOP and current training level.

    • Maintains a standard output for each shipment being processed and continuously improves speed and performance.

    • Immediately notifies Shipping Manager of any machine problems or anomalies outside of normal operations that effect output and the well-being of the equipment.

    • Takes initiative to ensure Shipping areas and the warehouse meet Thorne Research’s standard of sanitation and cleanliness.

    • Operates forklifts and pallet jacks as required by area assigned by supervisor.

  • Shipping Lead Material Handler Duties:

    • Employee maintains order integrity while efficiently emptying carts, pallets, and packing orders in a neat manner.

    • Employee accurately and efficiently pulls product for restock of distribution center and demonstrates attention to detail (for example, making sure you are pulling the right product and Thorne ID number).

    • Accurately and efficiently build and shrink wrap pallets for distribution.

    • Employee is consistent in their work, follows through with their work and sees projects or daily responsibilities through to a satisfactory end without supervision.

    • Employee observes the daily flow of the department and determines which job duty has priority.

    • Employee performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications, Experience and/or Education:  

  • By training, education and/or experience, employee must be able to perform the essential duties of the job.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.   

 

Language Ability:

  • Employee is able to read and understand written directions in English, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and the Thorne Research Employee Handbook.
  • The employee follows instructions, both verbal and written, and communicates effectively with supervisors and fellow employees. 

Math Ability:

  • Employee has the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in the units of measurement used in the Shipping Department, using whole numbers and decimals (for example, grams). 

Reasoning Ability:

  • During disassembly and assembly of machines, employee is able to discern that the parts and tools are the correct ones for the tasks at hand.

Computer and Technical Skills:

  • Employee can use a hand calculator to perform basic math calculations to complete records accurately. 

Physical Demands: 

  • Must be able to hear and converse with managers/ supervisors and other employees.
  • Must be able to work an entire shift, when necessary, while standing.
  • Must be able to work in a stationary position as well as move about unassisted.
  • Must be able to safely and carefully operate and use assigned equipment and machinery. 
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as circumstances arise during the course of a shift.
  • Must be able to operate, activate, use, prepare, and clean equipment, occasionally grasping with force and using twisting wrist movements.
  • Must be able to see and read small print.
  • Must be able to work in a moderate noise level environment.
  • Must be able to work an 8-hour shift and overtime as assigned.
  • Must be able to move or lift items weighing up to 75 pounds from table or pallet and back to floor, often repetitively, during an 8-hour shift.
  • Must have sufficient range of motion with arms and hands to reach overhead and to the side, often repetitively, during an 8-hour shift.
  • Must be able, on occasion, to ascend/descend a ladder while carrying up to 50 pounds of materials.
  • Employees are expected to meet the Physical Demands of their job, which is an essential duty of this job. If requested and deemed appropriate, Thorne Research will provide a reasonable accommodation to a disabled employee to meet the Physical Demands of the job.
