Machine Tool Maker
Job Summary:
This job group's main responsibility is to provide specialty machining services to the company. Examples of the job group's activities include machining, fitting, and related operations necessary to make jigs, fixtures, tools, products, and related items from various materials. Assist in diagnosing, developing solutions for, and correcting tool, jig, and fixture problems for operations.
- Locate and read blueprints, job travelers, and bills of material.
- Enhanced set up/Operate manual machines such as Bridgeport, surface grinders, engine lathe, drill press and band saws. Operation of tool room CNC machines. Teardown of fixtures and tooling.
- Use precision measuring instruments to ensure conformance of finished part to specifications. Bench layout skills using surface plate, height gage, optical comparator, and other inspection equipment.
- Responsible for upkeep of the machines – cleaning, filling oils, filling coolants, and other production maintenance upkeep.
- Responsible for intermediate level jig and fixture fabrication including fit at assembly, bench work, burring parts, checking parts, and filling out audit sheets.
- Must be able to communicate with leaders and work well with others in a team environment.
- Must be familiar with the department's production goals; help meet them through the application of best practices identified by Engineering and Management.
- Work efficiently throughout the day despite machine downtime or other production delays.
- Follow all safety and housekeeping procedures.
- Conformance to production and administrative procedures.
- Enhancement of existing processes.
- Journeymen's card or documented equivalent experience in tool maker environment
- 3-4 years previous manual and basic CNC machining experience required
- Basic tool resharpening
- Preferred Skills and Abilities
- Skilled in measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicators and optical comparators.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints to manufacture tools and fixtures to engineering specifications.
- Enhanced knowledge of cutting tools and their function in the machining process (examples include drills, end mills, form tools, and insert tip tooling).
- Intermediate knowledge of machining, heat treating, welding, and brazing techniques.
- Ability to reproduce sharp tools to manufacturing specifications using safe grinding practices; allowing tools to be re-introduced into machining operations.
- Technical Ability – effectively apply written/verbal instructions from procedures, documents, and blueprints, etc.
- Ability to hold close tolerances to Nordson’s engineering standards.
- Ability to Learn – assimilating and apply new, job-related information in a timely manner
- Adaptability – maintaining effectiveness in a changing environment, assignments, responsibilities and/or priorities
- Basic Computer Skills
