Under the ownership of Ocean Gold, the Haile Gold Mine of Lancaster County, South Carolina is transforming regional economic development while setting new standards for environmental protection throughout the industry.

By applying proven, modern technology and eco-friendly practices that go beyond regulatory requirements, millions of dollars are being invested in the community to build the mine and extract its estimated 30.5 million tonnes at 2.06 g/t for 2 million ounces of gold reserves(1). When all is said and done, more than 800 jobs will be created in an effort to make the Haile Gold Mine the most productive mine of its kind east of the Mississippi River – and the industry’s most environmentally sound operation throughout the United States. Laboratory Technician

 

 

  

Job Summary:  Laboratory (Lab) Technicians report to the Chief Assayer. These positions are hands-on positions responsible for the safe and efficient operation of lab equipment, instruments, and systems.  Technicians will perform a wide variety of job functions in multiple areas within the lab. 

 

 

 

 

Basic Functions of the Position: 

  • Performs all duties with a focus on safety, environmental stewardship and best operating practices.
  • Actively participates in Safety, Health, and Environmental initiatives.
  • Fully committed to producing quality timely results.
  • Operates lab equipment, instruments, and systems according to standard operating procedures and/or directed work instructions from the supervisor.
  • Must show competency in operating lab and mobile equipment and instrumentation.
  • Seeks to continuously improve work environment.
  • Must be able to assess, diagnose and remedy operating variances in a safe and timely manner.
  • Performs routine maintenance and will participate in equipment and instrument repairs.
  • Responsible for safe and effective handling of hazardous waste.
  • Other responsibilities may be added as necessary for the successful operation of Kershaw Mineral Lab.

 

Requirements:

  • Must work 12 hour rotating shifts (days and nights)
  • Knowledge of lab procedures, equipment and instrumentation is beneficial.
  • Working knowledge of computers is required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of chemistry or other sciences is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of operating a Lab Information Management System (LIMS) is beneficial.
  • Commitment to behavioral based safety culture.
  • Able to assess problems and make sound recommendations for solutions.
  • Able to work within a team and work well with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and effectively implement change.
  • High school diploma / equivalent or higher education.
  • Experience with mine sample preparation, fire assay, wet chemistry methods, gravimetric analysis, LIMS and AA/ICP/LECO instrumentation is beneficial.
  • Prior experience in a lab is beneficial. 
  • Must be able to clearly communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to perform basic mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
  • Ability to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems.

Physical Demands: 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs, talk, hear and see.
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 50 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds) during the course of the workday.
  • Work is in a surface mine plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity.
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
