Definition

Under direction, to supervise and participate in the work of ordering, receiving, recording, storing, issuing and delivering supplies and equipment in a county warehouse; to maintain and assist in the disposal of surplus county property and records generated by county departments; to supervise and participate in the maintenance of accurate inventory and accounting records, and to do other work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This class is responsible for directing the daily activities of the county warehouse. This class supervises the warehouse worker class and temporary help. This class differs from the class of Buyer in that the latter is responsible for analyzing bids and awarding supply contracts. The Senior Warehouse Worker evaluates products and provides input to the Buyers or Purchasing Agent.

Typical Tasks

Supervises and participates in the work of ordering and receiving stock, storing materials and county records, and filling orders and delivering materials, equipment and supplies to county departments; supervises and trains subordinate warehouse staff; maintains appropriate warehouse stock levels, considering cost; checks purchase orders and reconciles with packing slips and invoices checking for back orders, damages, shortages and pricing; plans warehouse storage area for optimum ordered, delivery dates, and related; maintains records generated by county departments as required; receives and stores and assists in the disposal of county records and surplus property; supervises and participates in taking physical inventory and reconciling with perpetual inventory; keeps accurate records and prepares reports; operates fork lifts, delivery trucks, and material handling equipment; determines standard product specifications for stocked items and makes recommendations to the Buyers.

Employment Standards

Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of inventory control procedures;
  • Working knowledge of material storage and material handling techniques;
  • Working knowledge of office procedures and practices;
  • Working knowledge of proper lifting techniques;
  • Some knowledge of the principals and practices of supervision.

Ability to:

  • Supervise the operation of the warehouse;
  • Calculate unit prices and keep accurate records and inventory;
  • Follow written and verbal instructions;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others contacted in the course of work;
  • Drive delivery vehicles and operate material handling equipment;
  • Lift and move heavy or bulky objects weighting over 50 pounds.
  • Prepare reports.

Training and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledges and abilities would be: One year of experience performing duties comparable to a Warehouse Worker in Santa Cruz County.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of valid California Class C Driver's License.
