Definition

Under supervision, to learn and perform a variety of office and field engineering tasks related to drafting, construction inspection, surveying, and office research; to assist the public; and to do other work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Engineering Aide I is the trainee level class in the series. Incumbents learn and perform under close supervision the more routine tasks and procedures related to engineering assignments in the field and office. As knowledge and abilities are acquired, incumbents are given increased responsibility and are expected to progress to the Engineering Aide II class after one year.

Engineering Aide II is the journey level class in the series. Incumbents generally perform a wide variety of routine to moderately difficult work in support of engineering services and may be assigned special project responsibilities. This classification is distinguished from the Engineering Technician classes, which require a high degree of technical judgement, and experience to successfully accomplish assigned projects with greater independence.

Typical Tasks

Prepares preliminary drawings or plans from survey data; checks building and construction plans, determines fees and processes permits; checks calculations for grading, sewers, landscaping and other improvements to assure compliance with County regulations; calculates and collects fees and service charges; prepares and reviews construction estimates; monitors construction schedules; assists in obtaining field survey data by using survey equipment and taking detailed field notes; sets stakes and control lines; cuts brush; performs right-of-way research for road alignment and drainage projects; operates blue print and other office machines; assists in reviewing and inspecting sewer lateral connections and extensions, driveways, encroachments and less complex construction work for conformance with engineering plans, specifications and County design criteria; gathers information for the preparation of construction plans and specifications; inputs, accesses, analyzes data and generates reports using a computer; assists the public in the office and in the field by answering questions regarding County regulations, ordinances, rules, maps and the status of projects; obtains material samples and learns to conduct tests of construction materials; writes letters, memos, and reports; reviews vehicle accident reports to identify damage to County property and posts accident data; updates and revises maps and road atlases; and maintains files and records.
