Definition

Under general supervision, to administer server hardware, software, operating systems, and security; and to do other work as required. This includes the design, installation, configuration, optimization, maintenance and support of host systems and may include database server administration and systems programming.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the journey level class. Incumbents perform a full range of moderately difficult duties and work is usually performed under general supervision. Incumbents independently perform assignments within established guidelines and procedures and receive technical guidance from higher-level staff; are able to identify moderately difficult problems and apply problem-solving skills to resolve them, often under tight time constraints; and regularly exercise independent judgment within the scope of work. Incumbents are typically responsible for the reliability and availability of at least one system service and may be the sole systems administrator for a small computer site; they may be responsible for at least one production database at the workgroup level, including backup and recovery, and may provide input and recommendations in the selection of database tools. Errors are limited to the local administrative site and their impact is moderate in terms of dollars, lost time and/or department image. Legal exposure, financial impact, and lost time resulting from data management errors are moderate.

Typical Tasks

  • Performs routine systems administration tasks such as hardware setup and upgrades, system backups, and preventive maintenance. Transports related equipment as necessary.
  • Implements basic infrastructure changes and recommends system design changes under direction of senior staff.
  • Provides direct user support with backup for advanced problems received from higher-level staff within the job family.
  • Implements and maintains security for assigned systems under direction of security officer.
  • Creates simple system scripts.
  • Installs or assists with the installation of network server-based applications that may require license management.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of backup and recovery strategies.
  • Provides support for database administration.
  • Assists with the installation and administration of database engines.
  • Reviews and analyzes the specifications of new hardware and software products and their compatibility with the existing operating environment.
  • Contributes to preparation and maintenance of production support documentation.
  • May coordinate tasks of subordinate staff members.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • System configuration parameters.

  • The principles, practices, and methods of designing server infrastructures.
  • At least one scaleable, multi-user database system.
  • The languages, hardware and tools specific to the assignment(s).

  • Networking and operating system concepts and their practical implementations.

  • Interpret customer/user requirements and use engineering techniques to design network and transmission systems.

  • Utilize system tools such as editors, debuggers, and performance monitors.
  • Utilize the languages, hardware, and tools specific to the assignment(s).
  • Manage all aspects of user accounts.
  • Understand and manipulate data structures.
  • Operate applicable troubleshooting software and analyze server and database problems using appropriate analysis tools.
  • Present technical concepts to non-technical staff.
  • Read, comprehend, and write technical documentation.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with other staff members, customers, contractors and vendors.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Lift equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

An Associate+s degree from an accredited college in computer science or a related field and two years of experience in systems administration.

OR

Current Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) certification or Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) certification and two years of experience in systems administration.

OR

Three years of experience in systems administration.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Background Investigation: Some positions may require fingerprinting and/or background investigation.

License: Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class C Driver License.

Physical Requirements: The ability to lift items weighing up to forty pounds.

Other Special Requirements: Availability to work irregular hours, which may include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
