Definition

Under direction, to plan, coordinate and evaluate the maintenance, repair, construction and facility landscaping of County parks, and government grounds, in a geographic area; to perform a variety of administrative support functions; and to do other related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the first full supervisory level in the parks maintenance worker series. Positions in this class are distinguished from positions in the lower class of Park Maintenance Worker III which function as maintenance specialists and crew leaders. This class is distinguished from the next higher class of Parks Maintenance Manager which has County-wide responsibility for maintenance and construction of County parks.

Typical Tasks

Evaluates, plans, prioritizes, schedules and assigns the day-to-day construction, maintenance, cleaning and repair activities of parks, grounds, structures and related appurtenances in a geographic area; inspects facilities to determine maintenance needs and adjusts schedules accordingly; develops and maintains an annual preventative and routine maintenance schedule for each facility; assists in the preparation of the budget for the facility and grounds improvement and maintenance function; administers and monitors park maintenance unit budgets, including purchase of routine maintenance supplies and equipment; trains subordinates in proper work procedures; maintains records and prepares reports of work performed; recommends and institutes improved work procedures; maintains safe working conditions for subordinates; reads plans, specifications and blueprints and makes estimates of labor and materials required; operates and arranges for the maintenance and repair of a variety of vehicles and power and hand tools; coordinates the placement of crew members from public employment, training and rehabilitation programs; may assist or perform skilled work in the planting, cultivation and care of trees, shrubs and other plantings, the installation of sprinkler systems, and the construction and repair of park buildings and equipment.

Employment Standards

Knowledge:

  • Thorough knowledge of the cultivation and care of shrubs,trees, lawns and other plants commonly found in park settings;
  • Working knowledge of the principles, practices and methods used in the construction, maintenance and repair of grounds, buildings, equipment, sprinkler systems and related facilities located on park and government grounds;
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision, including the scheduling, evaluating, coordinating and training of a subordinate work force;
  • Working knowledge of the proper use and care of vehicles and power and hand tools used in park maintenance and landscapingactivities;
  • Working knowledge of safe work procedures;
  • Working knowledge of appropriate pesticide use and safety practices.

Ability to:

  • Plan, schedule, assign, direct, review and evaluate the work of subordinate crews;
  • Identify park maintenance and safety problems and arrange for solution;
  • Train subordinate personnel in the procedures of the work;
  • Maintain accurate records, prepare reports, make cost estimates, and assist in budget preparation;
  • Interpret plans, blueprints, specifications and written reports;
  • Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the construction and maintenance of park facilities and equipment.

Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these would be:

  • One year as a Parks Maintenance Worker III.

  • Three years performing park, landscaping, ground maintenance and repair work at a level comparable to the class of Park Maintenance Worker II.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possess and maintain a California Class C Driver's license; possession of a valid California class A driver license is required for some positions.
  • Alcohol and drug tests will be administered to all candidates prior to final selection for positions requiring class A driver licenses upon entry and to employees in positions requiring these licenses as man- dated by Department of Transportation federal regulations. In addition, all candidates must provide specific employment history for up to the past ten years for all jobs they have held which required operation of a commercial motor vehicle.
  • Possession of a Qualified Applicators Certificate Category B issued by the State of California Department of Pesticide Regulations is required within the first year of employment.
  • Possession of a valid Certified Pool Operators certificate may be required for some positions.
