Definition

Under general supervision, operate a diesel driven three (3) axle truck with attached forty five (45) foot van type trailer hauling refuse; perform related duties in connection with the collection and disposal of refuse, and perform other duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this class operate a (3) axle diesel driven truck with attached forty five (45') foot van type trailer with a walking floor used in the transportation and unloading of refuse.

Typical Tasks

Complete pre-operation and post-operation inspections and maintains required records; operate truck and trailer over public highways and streets including narrow mountain roads; fuel and inspect equipment, make minor repairs and adjustments; fill out equipment condition reports and keep trucks and trailers in a neat, safe and clean condition; connect forty five (45') foot van type trailer to truck tractor; connect all appropriate hoses such as air and hydraulics to tractor; raise jack stand; insure all fluids are at proper level and equipment is clean and in good operating order; fill out all necessary equipment forms in an legible and accurate manner and deposits them in an assigned place; maneuver vehicle into the loading area at a refuse transfer station safely; after trailer is loaded properly, move vehicle from loading area and close a light weight debris screen on top of trailer; after loaded vehicle is properly weighed, transport refuse to a landfill site located approximately twenty eight (28) miles away in the south part of the County; enter the site and pull into a designated area; open debris screens and rear trailer door and engage walking floor to unload refuse; perform related duties in connection with the collection and disposal of refuse.

Employment Standards

Knowledge

Thorough knowledge of:

  • Routine inspection and maintenance as required in California State Vehicle Code.

Working knowledge of:

  • The safe operation of a (3) axle truck with attached forty five (45') foot van trailer; and all appropriate laws pertaining to the operating of said vehicle on public roadways.
  • Drivers' responsibilities contained in Motor Carrier Safety Title 13 of the California Administrative Code.

Some knowledge of

  • Occupational hazards.

Abilities

  • Drive a 3 axle articulated truck and trailer combination in a smooth, careful, and safe manner.
  • Recognize and take necessary precautions against hazardous driving conditions.
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • Deal courteously and effectively with the public.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Follow basic safety policies and procedures.
  • Accurately complete report forms.
  • Perform heavy physical labor, which involves pushing and pulling weights of up to 75 pounds.
  • May require lifting of up to 100 pounds with the assistance of another individual to mount a tire, or to position equipment blades.
  • Hear and distinguish various sounds, such as voices of co-workers in noisy environments and the sound of operating equipment.

Training and Experience

Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain such knowledge and abilities would be:

One year of experience operating a diesel driven three (3) axle truck tractor pulling a forty five (45') foot or longer trailer or truck tractor pulling a set of doubles;

OR

Six months of experience operating a diesel driven three (3) axle truck tractor pulling a forty five (45') foot or longer trailer or truck tractor pulling a set of doubles AND successful completion of an accredited truck driving training course on three (3) axle trucks pulling forty five (45') foot or longer trailers (training course must be recognized by the State of California as an accredited training course in the operation of heavy trucks on State highways);

OR

Two and one half (2 1/2) years experience equivalent to a Heavy Equipment Operator or Senior Disposal Site Worker with Santa Cruz County with a minimum of six (6) months of experience driving heavy three (3) axle trucks.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

License Requirements: Possession of a valid California classes A driver license with a Tank Endorsement and a Hazardous Materials endorsement.

Special Working Conditions: Exposure to variable temperatures and weather conditions; heights, such as fourteen foot ladders; high levels of noise; strong, unpleasant odors; infections which might cause chronic disease or death; dust and silica dust; allergens, such as stinging insects and poison oak; vibration, such as when operating pneumatic equipment or from the normal operation of a diesel truck; and the possibility of experiencing burns or bodily injury; exposure to non-ionizing radiation; and the possibility of contact with toxic substances or chemical irritants.

Other Special Requirements: Incumbents are required to work weekends and holidays.

Note: Alcohol and drug tests will be administered to all candidates prior to final selection for positions requiring class A or B driver licenses upon entry and to employees in positions requiring these licenses as mandated by Department of Transportation federal regulations. In addition, all candidates must provide specific employment history for up to the past ten years for all jobs they have held which required operation of a commercial motor vehicle.
