Distinguishing Characteristics
Typical Tasks
- Installs, documents, and maintains communication and network infrastructures.
- Reviews and analyzes hardware and cabling specifications to ensure compliance with standards.
- Works with outside contractors to resolve telecommunications or networking issues and may also troubleshoot and repair physical cable problems.
- Works with contractors to ensure compliance with County standards.
- Documents changes to the cable plant and is responsible for inventory management.
- Assists with service installations and troubleshoots routine service issues.
- Assists with moves/adds/changes to existing network and phone infrastructure.
- Transports related equipment as necessary.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Employment Standards
Working knowledge of:
- Basic telecommunication practices and principles, including wired and wireless networks and/or VoIP communication systems and services.
- Vendor/contractor support procedures.
- Proper telecommunication equipment operation, usage and procedures.
- Applicable network cabling industry standards.
Some knowledge of:
- Methods and techniques of troubleshooting network, wireless or VoIP related hardware, software and interconnectivity problems.
- The principles, practices and methods of installing and maintaining cable plant infrastructures.
Ability to:
- Utilize the languages, hardware, and tools specific to the assignment(s).
- Operate applicable troubleshooting equipment and analyze cable problems using appropriate test equipment.
- Train users on voice system and equipment operation.
- Accurately maintain a variety of technical and service records.
- Read, interpret and apply information from technical publications and documentation.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Work cooperatively and effectively with other staff members, customers, contractors and vendors.
- Lift items weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Distinguish color-coded wires.
- Work in confined/cramped body positions and climb ladders to work at elevations of 4-12 feet.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Completion of at least two courses in Cisco Networking principles / VoIP
OR
One year of experience in a networking or VoIP related field.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Background Investigation: Some positions may require fingerprinting and/or background investigation. License: Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class C Driver License.
Physical Requirements: Ability to perform moderately heavy physical work that includes lifting items up to forty pounds, climbing ladders to work at elevations from 4-12 feet, working in confined/cramped body positions and distinguishing color-coded wires.
Other Special Requirements: Availability to work irregular hours, which may include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
