Distinguishing Characteristics
Typical Tasks
- Designs, configures, documents, and maintains the enterprise communication and data network infrastructure.
- Performs service installations and troubleshoots service issues.
- Performs moves/adds/changes to existing network and phone infrastructure.
- Establishes and controls quality and quantity standards, procedures, and guidelines for the design, development, testing, implementation and maintenance of networks.
- Develops network standards and protocols for hardware, software, and integration procedures.
- Develops, tests and implements (as needed) disaster recovery procedures.
- Oversees compliance with industry, regulatory, and County standards.
- Monitors and maintains network security and integrity.? Develops network database policies and procedures.
- Analyzes needs and determines appropriate architecture, topology, and transmission requirements for installation of data applications.
- Assists in determining appropriate architecture, topology, and transmission requirements for installing data and voice applications.
- Develops work plans and schedules for projects, including outlining phases and identifying personnel and equipment requirements. Monitors progress and modifies schedules and plans as needed.
- Transports related equipment as necessary.
- May provide mentoring or training for junior staff.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
A Bachelor+s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in computer science or a closely related field and three years of experience in a networking or VoIP related field.
OR
Valid CCNA or related voice or network certification and four years of experience in a networking or VoIP related field.
OR
Five years of experience in a networking or VoIP related field.
Completed coursework in systems design is highly desirable.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Â
Background Investigation: Some positions may require fingerprinting and/or background investigation. License: Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class C Driver License.
Physical Requirements: Ability to perform moderately heavy physical work that includes lifting items weighing up to forty pounds, climbing ladders to work at elevations from 4-12 feet, working in confined/cramped body positions and distinguishing color-coded wires.
Other Special Requirements: Availability to work irregular hours, which may include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
