Definition
Under general supervision, to provide professional physical therapy services for physically disabled children and adolescents; and to do other work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The CCS Physical Therapist performs physical therapy in a Medical Therapy Unit for the California Children’s Services Program for physically disabled children and adolescents. Incumbents work directly from a physician's prescription, which frequently allows considerable latitude in methods of treatment. Therapy plans are developed individually and in conjunction with other staff and carried out by incumbents.
Typical Tasks
- Plans and administers physical therapy in accordance with instructions from physicians and supervisor;
- Tests and grades muscle power and evaluates range of motion, sensation, and developmental levels; D
- esigns and constructs or directs construction of special equipment and splints;
- Teaches exercises to children and adolsecents;
- Instructs children in walking, standing, balancing, and the use of crutches and braces;
- Explains orthopedic recommendations to children, adolescents and others;
- Consults with teachers, speech therapists and others as necessary;
- Requisitions equipment and supplies;
- Keeps clinical notes and records and prepares reports;
- Maintains equipment;
- Supervises the care of braces.
Employment Standards
Knowledge:
- Working knowledge of objectives and methods of physical therapy;
- Working knowledge of principles of physical therapy for treating children and adolescents, birth to age 21, with chronic neuromuscular, muscular and orthopedic disabilities;
- Working knowledge of testing and evaluating developmental, muscular and neural functions;
- Working knowledge of neuromuscular function and dysfunction;
- Working knowledge of skeletal anatomy, kinesiology and basic pathology of people with physical disabilities;
- Working knowledge of construction, use and care of orthopedic appliances and equipment;
- Working knowledge of psychological problems of children and adolescents and their effects on family members.
Abilities:
- Teach clients self-care and other suitable activities;
- Understand and interpret physicians' orders and adapt treatment programs to individual circumstances;
- Communicate verbal and written ideas clearly and logically;
- Prepare reports and maintain clinical case records;
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with clients and others contacted in the course of work;
- Set up treatment care plans for physically disabled children and adolescents.
Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- One year of experience performing physical therapy with physically disabled children and adolescents. Experience in a physical therapy internship program for developmentally disabled children may be substituted for the required experience on a month for month basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class C Driver License or the incumbent must provide suitable transportation approved by the appointing authority.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid license issued by the Physical Therapy Board of California to practice as a Physical Therapist in California
