This is a Position Based Test conducted in accordance with Civil Service Rule 111A.

Under general supervision, the 7358 Pattern Maker performs skilled work in connection with the fabrication, alteration, maintenance and repair of a variety of patterns for the manufacture of castings.
Examples of Important and Essential Duties:
- Constructs pattern equipment for a wide variety of castings and special pattern equipment as needed for fire, transit, water, power, and other departments providing city services.
- Constructs, repairs and alters wood and metal patterns and core boxes.
- Inspects and provides quality control over castings delivered by vendors.
- Constructs and repairs fire department ladders according to specifications.
- Maintains pattern tools and pattern shop machinery and equipment, including specifications for the procurement of new machinery.
- Transports pattern parts, materials and related equipment using city vehicle.
- Calculates shrinkage of metal and alloys.
- Designs, lays out and constructs simple or intricate patterns from blueprints, sketches or models.
- Repairs broken or damaged pattern equipment and corrects same to compensate for defects in castings.
- Makes filing cabinets and office equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Nature of work: requires continuous close attention and working within very close tolerances; some physical effort and considerable manual dexterity; exposure to working conditions where minor and major injuries may occur.
Requires completion of high school, supplemented by completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the craft and three years of experience as a journeyman patternmaker; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Possession of a valid California driver license.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight Qualifying):
Candidates will be prompted to complete a Supplemental Questionnaire as part of the online employment application. This Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications for this position. Applicants must also complete the official application. It is essential that applicants provide complete information in identifying their education, experience and training. The Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
Oral/Performance Examination (Weight 100%):
Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the oral/performance examination designed to assess their relative knowledge, skills and abilities in job-related areas, which may include, but not be limited to knowledge of: the methods, practices, safety, tools, equipment and materials, various types of woods, metals and alloys, plasters and plastics associated with patternmaking; ability or skill to: design, lay out and make simple or intricate patterns; calculate shrinkages for various types of metals and alloys, work from blueprints, drawings, sketches, samples or oral instructions, communicate verbally in a clear and effective manner, maintain effective working relationships, use pattern making tools, materials and equipment. Candidates must achieve a passing score in order to be ranked on the eligible list.
The certification rule for the ranked eligible lists resulting from this examination will be Rule of Three Scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
Eligible List/Score Report:
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 12 months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
