APPOINTMENT TYPEPermanent-Exempt.   The General Services Agency Department of Public Works has an opening for an exempt appointment in San Francisco.  The position is excluded by the Charter from competitive civil service examination process.  The successful candidate shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.  This position is funded by the Earthquake Emergency Response Bond Program and PUC Sewer System Improvement Program with an anticipated duration of up to three (3) years.

JOB DESCRIPTION:   The Department of Public Works-Building Design & Construction (DPW- BDC) division is a full service Professional Architectural office that provides Architectural services to City agencies in San Francisco.  The DPW-BDC is one of the few City Departments in the State of California that provide full Architectural design services.  Our work includes improving the overall standard of design quality in the great projects such as Fire Houses, Libraries, Public Safety Buildings and Health Services buildings.  We are proud to be providing full service design and construction for our great City.  

The DPW BDC currently has an opening for Architectural Associate I - Designer.  We are seeking motivated candidates for this position which will have a design focus, i.e. an intermediate design level position.  The successful candidate should have expertise in projects of all sizes to assume project design responsibility for planning, development and execution of planning & technical documentation which may include interpreting, organizing and coordinating project team assignments while continuously striving to improve the overall standards of design quality.  

Under the direction of senior management, the Architectural Associate I will perform a variety of difficult and responsible architectural duties with a focus on Architectural Design.    This position will be responsible for duties including, but not limited to: 

·    Demonstrated ability to provide conceptual designs through design development for new construction and tenant improvements, /or including presentation work that entails hand drawings, sketch-up, and/or photoshop or other presentation software. 

·    Prepares and supervises the preparation of preliminary plans and detailed drawings for a wide variety of complex construction projects.

·     Develops finished designs of small to medium sized projects and portions of designs for highly complex projects.

·     Analyzes and interprets; sketches and designs; and provides technical assistance and coaching to junior architectural drafting personnel engaged in such work.

·     Prepares and assists in the preparation of contract specifications for various projects; coordinates design activities with those responsible for the structural, mechanical and electrical design phases of such projects; participates in conferences and discussions with representatives of City departments and outside organizations relative to design, specifications, and functional use problems.

  • Execute the designed scope and facilitate approvals with the team.  Assist on the communication between consultants such as architects, engineers, interior lighting consultants, construction personnel and/or subcontractors, and other consultants as applicable.

·   Makes field inspections during construction and prepares drawings for buildings for approval by regulatory agencies.

  • Assist to administer construction contracts by making site visits to monitor progress; respond to RFIs; and check shop drawings, and material samples proposed for substitution, to determine if contract specifications are in compliance.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

-         Strong Design & Presentation skills

-         Strong verbal and written communication skills

-           Supervisory experience over drafting or support staff  

-         A license to practice architecture in the State of California, issued by the California Architects Board.

-         2 year Revit experience and/or Autodesk Revit Certification

-         Highly Skilled in Sketch-Up and Photoshop

-         Skilled in AutoCAD

-         LEED AP or required to attain within 6 months of hire

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

1.   Possession of a Baccalaureate degree in Architecture or Bachelor of Architecture Degree from an accredited college or university; AND

2.   Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience which include:

a.    Comprehensive knowledge of architectural terms, symbols, theory, details, and designing practices; considerable knowledge of architectural site development; graphic arts and the techniques of illustration. 

b.    Requires considerable ability to: Initiate, prepare and review architectural plans, and specifications; apply architectural design principles and techniques in the development of architectural drawings at all phases including schematic design, design development and construction documents.

Conviction History
