Introduction

APPOINTMENT TYPE:  Permanent - Exempt.   The General Services Agency Department of Public Works has an opening for an exempt appointment in San Francisco.  The position is excluded by the Charter from competitive civil service examination process.  The successful candidate shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.  This position is funded by various Bond Programs, including the Earthquake Emergency Response Bond Program and PUC Sewer System Improvement Program with an anticipated duration of up to three (3) years.  In order to be considered for a permanent appointment, incumbent will be required to successfully compete in a Civil Service Examination.

JOB DESCRIPTION:   The Department of Public Works Building Design & Construction (DPW BDC) division is a full service Professional Architectural office that provides Architectural services to City agencies in San Francisco.  The DPW BDC is one of the few City Departments in the United States that provide full Architectural design and project delivery services.  Our work includes great projects such as Fire Houses, Libraries, Recreation Buildings, Parks, Public Safety Buildings and Health Services buildings.  We are proud to be providing full service design and construction for our great city. 

The DPW BDC is seeking one motivated candidate for appointment to position as 5268 Architect – which has aDesign Focus, i.e. a Senior Designer.  The successful candidate should have expertise in projects of all sizes to assume project design responsibility for planning, development and execution of planning & design documentation which may include interpreting, organizing and coordinating project team assignments while continuously striving to improve the overall standards of design quality.  The primary role of this position will be to oversee and implement the design standards and programs for the Building, Design & Construction Division for the Department of Public Works Architectural Division. 

The ideal candidate shall possess:  

·      extensive experience with design and delivery of large-scale, programmatically complex projects;

·      a proven track record in delivering projects at all scales and leading multiple project teams with a high standard of design excellence;

·       the ability to establish and maintain excellent Client relationship; ability to maintain a successful relationship and interface regularly with the Civic Design Review Board, participating in monthly informal and formal design reviews of all projects;

·       demonstrated design experience in buildings of all scales with an excellent portfolio of both built and un-built projects;

·       experience working as a collaborator and leader within a multi-disciplinary team environment teaching and inspiring others to strive for continued design excellence;

·       ability to establish and maintain excellent Client relationships;

·      excellent presentation skills, be articulate and have the ability to work and lead effectively in a team environment;

·      a track record of developing forward-looking and innovative approaches to architecture.

 

The Architect – Senior Designer will be responsible for BDC Design excellence and staffing, and should have a sophisticated understanding of the relationship between architectural design and building technology, with a commitment to continually raise the bar of design excellence within the organization while motivating and mentoring our staff to do the same.

 

Under the direction of the Division Manager, the Architect – Senior Designer performs difficult and responsible professional architectural work in connection with the design, construction, maintenance and conversion of public buildings; plans, assigns and directs the activities of assigned personnel engaged in such work; and performs related duties as required.   In conjunction with managing and performing the design and technical aspects of projects summarized above, the Architect – Senior Designer provides comprehensive project planning and coordination services, including maintaining client relationships, support of contract negotiation and administration, public and user group presentations, and maintenance of budgets and schedules for the assigned projects.  The Architect – Senior Designer also participates in the professional development of subordinate staff. 

 

The Architect – Senior Designer will be responsible for expertise in architectural duties which include, but are not limited to:

·       Preparing and conducting presentations to Clients, Public interest groups and Commissions.

·       Supervising and participating in the preparation of complex and difficult conceptual, schematic and detailed design.

·       Participating in the preparation of Proposals for Services and agreements with Clients to establish and maintain positive professional relationship 

·       Planning, distributing and coordinating work by staff; coordinating the work of multiple design and engineering disciplines; checking drawings and specifications prepared by staff, consulting Architects and Engineers for conformance with design intent, project program criteria and codes.

·       Overseeing core design staff and provides on-going staff assessment to Division Manager. 

·       Working with the office Design Committee and Core Design Staff to set the standards for in-house design critiques for all projects.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

 

1.    Possession of a current license to practice architecture in the State of California issued by the California State Board of Architectural Examiners.  Proof of license to be submitted with application.  AND

2.    Two (2) years of verifiable experience as a license architect in architectural design, construction, maintenance and alteration of buildings.  This experience must include at least one (1) year directing staff in the preparation of plans and specifications.

3.    Possession and maintenance of valid California Drivers License.  Proof of license to be submitted with application

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

·      Advanced degree in Architecture or Design preferred, with a rigorous design education

·      Eight (8) years of progressively / increasingly responsible experience which includes:

§  Comprehensive knowledge of architectural and interior architecture terms, symbols, theory, details, and designing practices; considerable knowledge of architectural site development; graphic arts and the techniques of illustration. 

§  Requires considerable ability to: Initiate, prepare and review architectural plans, specifications and estimates; apply architectural design principles and techniques.

·      10+ years of relevant architecture and design experience, with a strong background designing multiple building typologies of varying scale.

·      Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, Photoshop, and Sketch-Up

·      Excellent analytical and problem solving skills

·      Outstanding graphic presentation skills

·      Ability to develop collaborative relationships across the firm, with clients, and with other key constituents

·      Ability to communicate design concepts verbally and graphically to client and staff

·      Ability to generate multi-media perspective sketches a plus

Conviction History

As part of the selection process an image of your fingerprints will be captured and sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) history will disqualify you as a candidate based on the specific requirements of the position to which you are applying. Disaster Service Workers
