APPOINTMENT TYPE:  Permanent-Exempt.  The General Services Agency Department of Public Works hasopenings for exempt appointment in San Francisco.  The positions are excluded by the Charter from competitive civil service examination process.  The successful candidate shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer. These positions have an anticipated duration of up to three (3) years.



The Mechanical Engineering Section of the DPW-Infrastructure Design & Construction Division is looking for an Engineering Assistant to assist the section in performing beginning level technical engineering/drafting work related to the planning, design and construction of building, Auxiliary Water Supply System (AWSS) and wastewater projects.


Under general direction, essential functions of the Engineering Assistant position include: preparing engineering drawings and other graphic material using manual drafting methods, AutoCAD and Revit 3D computer-aided drafting software; developing Revit families, checking for accuracy and compliance with drafting standards; conducting field investigations and gathering, preparing and maintaining data, records and reports for the preparation of designs and drawings; making preliminary checks and reviewing drawings to ensure accuracy, engineering sufficiency and conformance to specifications; assisting in the preparation of cost and quantity estimates for engineering projects; processing contractor construction shop submittals through logging, transcribing and filing of materials; indexing, reproducing and maintaining files, drawings and computer databases; making trigonometric and other mathematical computations in the course of drafting work; operating and performing minor maintenance on equipment to produce drawings and other documents; responding orally to inquiries and requests for information from the general public, contractors and other agencies; preparing memos, letters and engineering reports; learning new drafting systems and standards as necessary;  and performing other related duties as required.



1.       Two years of verifiable mechanical engineering drafting experience using computer-aided drafting (specifically AutoCAD and REVIT) and manual drafting to prepare engineering drawings. This experience must have been obtained within the last five years; AND

2.       Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license at the time of employment (submit copy with application).


Substitution: Possession of a Certificate of Completion in REVIT drafting or Computer Aided Drafting from an accredited college or technical/vocational school may be substituted for 6 months of the required two-year experience stated in MQ #1.

Conviction History
