The Real Estate & Development Assistant Deputy Director is responsible for the leasing and property management of the non-maritime portions of the Port’s 7.5 miles of waterfront property. The position supervises staff who prepare and directly prepares, with the City Attorney, dozens of lease and license transactions at any one time.

Describe your experience, training, and familiarity with complex real estate issues, including, fundamentals of real estate finance, real estate market analysis and financial feasibility principles. Include in your response how you managed (directly or through staff) multiple transactions simultaneously.

The Assistant Deputy Director will closely track and likely participate in significant lease negotiations.  Describe your skills and approach to lease negotiations. If possible, provide insights into how negotiations for public property may differ from private-to-private lease transactions.

The Assistant Deputy Director is a senior level position with supervisory responsibilities to manage a team of highly trained and talented staff.  

Describe your experience supervising real estate, development, or similar staff.  How do you set and enforce work program management protocols, schedules and deliverables?  Include the number of years in a supervisory role, number of staff supervised, and extent of supervision exercised (e.g. assigned/reviewed work, approved time off, conducted performance evaluations, etc.).    

From your supervisory experience, provide an example of the most challenging performance management issue that you have faced.   Include the following in your response:

  • What was the situation and how it was resolved?
  • If the outcome was something you felt should have been different, what would you have done differently given the knowledge of how you originally handled it?
