 What You'll Be Doing

SFUSD has vacancies in the classification of 9977 Parent and Community Involvement Coordinator. Under general direction, the position will be responsible for the development, organization and evaluation of a comprehensive program to improve and increase parent and community involvement in the San Francisco Unified School District; promoting public relations with the community by assisting in the development and dissemination of information to promote and enhancing parent participation in the education of the youth of San Francisco; providing technical and liaison services; and performing related duties as required.

The Parent and Community Involvement Coordinator serves as a liaison between the School District and parents with regard to a specific or special program. Positions in this class develop workshops, training sessions and other public relations materials in order to encourage communication with parents and the community and to increase parental involvement and understanding in the school processes.

The essential duties include:

the class specifications shall be descriptive of the class and shall not be considered a restriction on the assignment of duties not specifically listed." (CSC Rule 7)

  • Consults with and advises district management on ways to involve parents in the activities of the San Francisco Unified School District.
  • Attends school and community meetings to inform staff, parents and the community on district activities; contacts individuals and groups to disseminate information on district programs and activities; and responds to questions and requests from school sites, parents, organizations and community groups.
  • Organizes, implements and coordinates training workshops and seminars on strategies for parental involvement for administrators, school staff, resource personnel, parents and community organizations.
  • Addresses civic, faculty, service, parent, student and community groups as a district representative to explain a specific program; gives progress reports and provides information on educational programs and services of the San Francisco Unified School District.
  • Investigates complaints from parents and the community related to a specific district program; recommends corrective action to preclude further adverse action or opinion; may prepare replies to such complaints; may provide counseling and referral services.
  • Prepares and assists in the preparation of periodic and annual reports related to public relations activities; maintains a current file on parent education and parent involvement material, community resource file and other records essential to an effective parent and community involvement program.
  • Provides information to parents in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Tagalog or other languages in order to improve home-school communications between the targeted schools and the community and to promote and enhance integration efforts.
  • Provides technical assistance to school sites and community groups for the establishment and development of parent education and parent involvement programs.
  • Supervises volunteer, clerical, and paraprofessional staff as required; may advise and train others in public and human relations problems and techniques. 

Minimum Qualifications

Education: 

Two (2) years of college-level course work (30 semester or 45 quarter units = one year).

Experience: 

Two (2) years of verifiable experience working in the community with culturally, ethnically and socio-economically diverse populations, preferably in a school district setting (one year = 2,000 hours). Such experience should include program planning and coordination. Bilingual/Bi-literate proficiency may be required for some positions. Must pass SFUSD Fluency exam.   

SUBSTITUTION: Additional qualifying work experience may be used to substitute for qualifying education on a year-for-year basis. (30 semester or 45 quarter units = 1 year).

Selection Procedures

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight: Qualifying): 

Applicants will be prompted to complete a Supplemental Questionnaire as part of the online employment application. This Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the minimum qualifications for this position. Applicants must also complete the official application. It is essential that applicants provide complete information in identifying their education, experience and training. The Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

 

Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation (Weight: 100%): 

Candidates will be prompted to complete a supplemental questionnaire as part of the online employment application. The Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation is designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities required for the 9977 Parent and Community Involvement Coordinator position. All relevant experience, education and/or training must be on the supplemental questionnaire in order to be reviewed in the rating process. 

The information provided on the supplemental questionnaire must be consistent with the information on the application and is subject to verification. Once submitted, applicant responses on the supplemental questionnaire cannot be changed. Candidates will be placed on the eligible list in rank order according to their final score.

A passing score must be achieved on the Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation in order to be ranked on the score report. Candidates will be placed on the score report in rank order according to their final score.

 

Score Report: 

A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 6 months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

Upon approval of the Human Resource Director (see Civil Service Rule 111A.26.5), the eligible list/score report resulting from this announcement may be used by other departments that also use this classification or a similar classification. Certification: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of the List. The hiring department may conduct additional selection processes to make final hiring decisions. 

Conviction History

Disaster Service Workers
