The purpose of the 2320 Registered Nurse, Neonatal Care Training Program is to prepare the new graduate nurse or inexperienced Registered Nurse so that s/he may provide safe and competent nursing care to all patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) setting.
Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) is an essential part of San Francisco’s health care system serving some 100,000 patients each year and providing 20 percent of the city’s inpatient care. Recognized as one of the nation’s top hospitals, we serve the community with a full complement of inpatient, outpatient, emergency, diagnostic and psychiatric services for adults and children 24-hours a day.
The Infant Care Center, though licensed for 12 NICU beds, has space capability of 28-beds for Level III- Intensive Care as well as Well-Newborns. Patients admitted to the unit include infants from 24 weeks gestational age to term babies. The management of these infants includes, but is not limited to, conventional mechanical ventilation, high frequency ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide and central hyper-alimentation. Infants are readmitted for possible sepsis, phototherapy, dehydration, apnea, and respiratory distress. Pediatric patients, up to 2 years of age (non-trauma) requiring continuous physiologic monitoring or intensive care are also admitted to the ICC.
Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse in the Neonatal Care Training Program performs professional nursing duties. Essential functions include:
- Performing nursing admission and assessment of well newborns to the most acute patents;
- Developing and implementing neonatal care plans based on individualized patient needs;
- Carrying out medical treatment plans and reporting unfavorable changes to the physician in a timely fashion;
- Performing point of care laboratory tests and obtaining diagnostic specimens;
- Following medication management standards, administering medications utilizing the automatic medication dispensing machine (omnicell) system, and monitoring side effects;
- Assisting physician in newborn resuscitation and performance of invasive procedures;
- Accountable for all clinical nursing care on assigned shift;
- Participating in unit performance improvement projects and maintaining unit standard activities;
- Performing effective communication with parents, providing basic newborn care teachings, referral, and objectively documenting parent-infant interaction; and
- Performing other related duties as assigned/required.
1. Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including an interim permit) California Registered Nurse license; AND
2. Possession of a valid Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program; AND
3. Possession of a valid Certification in Basic Life Support

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate Requirement/Provision:
Possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association is required as a provision to employment for all positions. Eligibles who do not possess such a certification may participate in this examination process and be appointed to a position(s), but will be required to obtain the certificate within two (2) weeks of hire date and maintain validity throughout length of employment. A photocopy of the valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate must be provided to the appropriate supervisor of the appointment within the allotted time frame. Failure to demonstrate/show proof of possession of valid certification within two (2) weeks of hire date and throughout length of employment may result in dismissal and/or termination of employment.
