A Deputy Sheriff I performs a variety of law enforcement duties including but not limited to the custody and supervision of inmates in the San Francisco County Jail system, administering alternative programs to incarceration, general law enforcement duties and patrol operations.  Employees may be assigned to any one of the following divisions:


·        Custody Operations

·        Field Operations

·        Administration and Programs


Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:  Booking and processing inmates; controlling and supervising the activities of inmates; operating communication equipment; monitoring and controlling movement of all personnel and vehicles entering and exiting facilities; maintaining internal and perimeter jail, court or building security; preparing and maintaining records; responding to disturbances and emergencies; preserving evidence and chain of custody at crime and emergency scenes; patrolling on foot and in vehicles, watching for indications of illegal or unauthorized activities and contraband; testifying in court and at hearings; conducting criminal investigations; completing detailed and accurate reports; administering alternatives to incarceration, ensuring program participation and returning offenders to custody as authorized by law; responding to public inquiries in a professional manner; and performing other general law enforcement duties as required. This position requires shift work, weekend/holiday work and overtime.

Appointment to class 8302 Deputy Sheriff I is for a period of eighteen (18) months except as otherwise provided by Civil Service Rules.  All appointees must satisfactorily complete a California Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) Basic Academy and a Sheriff’s Department entry-level training program within the time prescribed by the department.  Failure to successfully complete these requirements or failure to perform satisfactorily on the job will be cause for release from appointment.  If an applicant possesses a P.O.S.T Basic Academy certificate, the certificate must meet the requirements as set forth in this examination announcement.

Appointees who have successfully completed a P.O.S.T Basic Academy and who have successfully completed the eighteen (18) month probationary period in class 8302 Deputy Sheriff I will advance to Class 8504 Deputy Sheriff pursuant to Civil Service Rule 114, Article VII.  No further probationary period will be required upon advancement to class 8504. The salary range for class 8504 Deputy Sheriff is $82,056 - $104,598.

Minimum Qualifications

Entry-Level applicants must meet all of the following minimum qualifications listed below in order to be eligible to participate in the examination.  Official verification of the minimum qualifications will be required at the time of the background investigation.


1. AGE:

Applicant must be at least 20 years old at the time of application and 21 years old at the time of appointment.  There is no maximum age limit.



Applicants must be a United States citizen at the time of appointment.


Applicants must NOT have been:

·        Convicted of a felony;

·        Convicted of any misdemeanor that carries a penalty of prohibiting ownership, possession or control of a firearm;

·        Convicted of an offense involving domestic violence; or

·        Restricted from employment with the City & County of San Francisco


Applicants must possess and maintain a valid driver license at the time of appointment. 



Applicants must possess a U.S. high school diploma or have passed an equivalency test (G.E.D. or California High School Proficiency Examination), or possess a two-year or four-year degree or higher from an accredited college or university. 



One (1) year (equivalent to 2,080 hours) of any verifiable and satisfactory work experience, or one (1) complete year of any verifiable course work from an accredited U.S. college or university (30 semester hours/45 quarter units), or an equivalent combination.

Computers are available for the public (from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday) to file online applications in the lobby of the Department of Human Resources at 1 South Van Ness Avenue, 4th Floor, San Francisco.  The offices close at 5:00 p.m. so it is recommended that applicants arrive by at least 4:00 p.m. in order to allow time to complete the application.

All applicants must complete the Supplemental Questionnaire with the online application, or the application will not be considered. Resumes will not be accepted.  Applicants will complete the Supplemental Questionnaire online and it will be submitted with the application.  The Supplemental Questionnaire will assist in the determination of whether applicants meet the eligibility requirements to participate in the examination. All answers to the Supplemental Questionnaire must be completed, and all information is subject to verification.  Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements are not guaranteed to advance through all of the steps in the selection process.  An incomplete Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification of your application. 



P.O.S.T. Certificates: 
Applicants who possess a valid California P.O.S.T certificate(s) must submit all verification by the deadline date to:

Veteran’s Preference:
Applicants who are applying for Veteran’s Preference points in an entrance examination must submit a DD Form 214 and a Veteran’s Preference Application by the deadline date to:

Verification of P.O.S.T certificates and Veteran’s Preference applications must be e-mailed as PDF or Word documents by the stated deadlines. Verification that is sent by any other method than that which is listed above (e.g., fax, mail, and hand-delivery) will not be accepted.  Verification that is not required for this examination as set forth in this announcement will not be accepted. 

PAT Exemptions:
Candidates who are requesting an exemption the Physical Agility Test (PAT) must submit a valid Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) PAT score.  Official WSTB scores must include the full name of the applicant, date the PAT was taken and the passing score on valid agency documentation. Additional information regarding PAT exemptions are listed below, under "Special Notes." 

Verification for PAT exemptions will be requested at a later date, after adoption of the eligible list.      

Verification of certification/experience/education may be required at any point in the selection process. Failure to provide verification, if requested, will result in ineligibility for employment. All statements made on the application or on subsequent documents required under this selection process are subject to verification. Falsifying one’s test scores, education, training, or work experience or attempted deception on the application will result in disqualification.

Selection Procedures

Candidates must pass all of the components listed below in order to continue in the selection process.


Written Examination:


Candidates who meet the Minimum Qualifications will be scheduled to take the California Post Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) examination.


Scheduling notifications will be issued via e-mail approximately 2 weeks prior to the test administration date. Test administration dates will be scheduled approximately every three months, as needed, or as capacity allows.  Applicants who meet the Minimum Qualifications will be scheduled and notified by the City & County of San Francisco.  Test results will be e-mailed to candidates within 30 business days of the test administration date.


The PELLETB, developed by P.O.S.T, measures reading comprehension and writing abilities.  No inspection of questions and answers is allowed.  The passing total T-score for the Sheriff’s Department is 46 or higher.

30-Day Re-Testing P.O.S.T Restriction:


Applicants who have taken a PELLETB less than 30 days prior to the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department testing date will not be allowed to re-test.  P.O.S.T requires that applicants must wait for a period of one month (30 calendar days) before taking the PELLETB again. This applies whether the test was taken at the Sheriff’s Department or at different department/agency than the original exam.  Applicants who take the PELLETB at the Sheriff’s Department in violation of the 30-day re-testing restriction will not receive a score from P.O.S.T, and will be disqualified from the 8302 Deputy Sheriff I examination. 



Exemption from Written Examination (PELLETB): 

Applicants do not need to take the PELLETB for this examination if they:



A)    Have completed a PELLETB within 1 year prior to the scheduled PELLETB test administration date and achieved a T-Score of 46 or higher; or


B)    Possess a valid California P.O.S.T Academy Certificate of Completion, a California P.O.S.T Basic Certificate or a California P.O.S.T Basic Course Waiver Certificate.

Only California P.O.S.T, PELLETB T-Scores will be accepted. 



Note:  Test scores for Correctional Officer, Frontline National National Testing Network (NTN) or scores of any other type will not be accepted.  Please do not submit any of these scores.


Applicants who are claiming exemption from the PELLETB must submit official verification by the deadline provided in this examination announcement. 


Eligible List:


Candidates who achieve a passing score on the PELLETB, or who submit valid California POST certificates by the deadline, will be placed on the eligible list in the order of their scores.  Candidates’ names will remain on the eligible list for a maximum period of 24 months. Candidates who are on the eligible list may not re-apply for class 8302 Deputy Sheriff I until their eligibility has expired.



The Certification Rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of the List. 

The number of refusals allowed is zero (0).



All candidates on the eligible list must successfully complete the Departmental Selection Process as described below.



Placement on the eligible list does not guarantee nor imply that you will be offered employment.  The City & County of San Francisco reserves the right to hire only the most suitably qualified candidates for this important position.  The eligible list resulting from this examination is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals or additional scores/ranks) as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.


Departmental Selection Process:


After the eligible list is adopted, the Sheriff’s Department will administer the following selection processes to determine the most suitable candidates.  Dates will be scheduled approximately every three months, as needed or as capacity allows; candidates will be scheduled and notified by the Sheriff’s Department. Candidates must successfully complete all of the components listed below to continue in the departmental selection process.


1. Physical Ability Test (PAT) 

Candidates must pass a PAT based on the physical requirements for the Deputy Sheriff I position.  A description of the PAT will be issued at a later date to candidates who are placed on the eligible list and are not exempt from taking the PAT.  The PAT is pass/fail. 

2. Oral Interview

Candidates will be interviewed to evaluate their interpersonal effectiveness, oral communication and information processing abilities.  The oral interview will be rated by subject matter experts, who will make recommendations as to which candidates should proceed in the selection process. 

3. Background Investigation

Candidates must complete and pass an employment, character and background investigation to determine fitness for employment as a Deputy Sheriff.  A comprehensive personal history statement must be completed, and all statements by the candidates are subject to verification.  Candidates will be required to pass a polygraph test, a drug test and a psychological screening.  Applicants who are untruthful during their background investigation will be disqualified.


A review of judicial and driving records will be conducted.  Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment, and have a current history of careful and responsible motor vehicle operation. Prior negligent operator probation, license suspension, drunk, reckless, or hit and run driving, or multiple moving violations may be cause for disqualification, regardless of where they occurred. At the time of application or thereafter, any type of vehicle-related probation, or driving without a valid license, or driving without insurance will be disqualified.


Applicants must meet P.O.S.T background requirements to become a California State Peace Officer.  Criminal history, repeated or serious unlawful behavior, use of controlled substances, poor credit, unsatisfactory job performance, inability to deal with co-workers, inability to accept supervision, negative employment or personal references or other relevant factors will result in disqualification.


4. Medical Examination

Prior to appointment, candidates must be determined by a licensed physician to be free

from any physical condition that would adversely affect the ability to perform the duties of a Peace Officer. Candidates must pass a medical examination by a designated City physician and must meet minimum standards for hearing, color vision, visual acuity and other prescribed physical standards.




P.O.S.T Basic Academy Graduates:

Candidates must indicate on the Supplemental Questionnaire that they are an Academy graduate if they possess:


1.     A current California P.O.S.T Basic Academy graduation certificate;

2.     A current California P.O.S.T Requalification Course certificate;

3.     A current California P.O.S.T Basic Course Waiver Certificate; or

4.     Current enrollment in a California P.O.S.T Basic Academy


Candidates must submit a copy of their P.O.S.T certificate(s) as set forth in this examination announcement.

Academy graduates must pass all of selection components listed in this announcement.  If hired, P.O.S.T Academy trained applicants may start at a higher salary step.

Exemption from Physical Ability Test (PAT):

Candidates do not need to take the PAT for this examination if they possess a valid:



A.     California P.O.S.T Academy Certificate of Completion;

B.     California P.O.S.T Basic Certificate;

C.    California P.O.S.T Basic Course Waiver Certificate;

D.    California P.O.S.T Requalification Course Certificate, dated within 6 months of the candidate’s scheduled PAT date; or

E.     California WSTB certificate indicating a passing PAT score, dated within 6 months of the candidate’s scheduled PAT date.

Only California WSTB passing scores will be accepted for the PAT exemption. PAT scores of any other type will not be accepted.  



Candidates who are requesting exemption from the PAT must submit official verification prior to the candidate’s scheduled PAT date and time.  Please refer to the “Verification” section of this announcement for details.

Conviction History

As a finalist for a job, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you are a finalist. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
