Established in 1922, the San Francisco Employees’ Retirement System (“SFERS”) is dedicated to securing, protecting and prudently investing pension trust (the “Trust”) assets and administering a defined benefit pension fund for eligible members of the City and County of San Francisco (the “City”), San Francisco Unified School District, City College of San Francisco, and the Superior Court for the County of San Francisco. SFERS’ Retirement Board (the “Retirement Board”) and investment team oversee the management of $26 billion in Trust assets in public equity, fixed income private equity, venture capital, real estate, real assets, private debt, and absolute return investments. Reporting directly to the Director - Public Equity, the Security Analyst will be responsible for assisting in the management and oversight of SFERS' domestic and international equity portfolios. This involves:
$9.0 billion in public equity assets (currently 34% of the Trust); and
Approximately 20 external public equity managers that are responsible for both actively and passively managed mandates

The Security Analyst is a member of the investment team of the San Francisco Employees' Retirement System (SFERS). The SFERS Retirement Board sets forth the policies and procedures for the investment program. This position provides technical, professional and administrative support for the Director - Public Equity, the Managing Director - Public Markets, and the Chief Investment Officer. Incumbents in this class perform difficult and complex research as well as due diligence work involving knowledge of the capital markets and the asset management industry.
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:
Perform regular due diligence analysis on existing investment managers;
Assist in evaluation of public equity portfolios using various analytic tools;
Help source and monitor prospective investment managers;
Provide analysis to support investment recommendations and performance reports;
Performs administrative duties related to custody, legal, compliance, and other portfolio initiatives; and
Prepare and coordinate approval notification processes for cash and security transfers with custodian bank and external investment managers.
These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; AND
Experience: Two (2) years of relevant investment experience with a major financial institution, consulting organization, pension fund, endowment, foundation, family office, or sovereign wealth fund, including experience monitoring and measuring performance within institutional portfolios and the capital markets; developing quantitative applications to analyze and monitor public and/or private investments including qualitative skills for assessment and recommendations.
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major coursework in economics, business, finance, accounting, mathematics, statistics, banking may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.
- Possession of a master’s degree in economics, business, finance, accounting, mathematics, statistics, banking, or similar field may substitute for the required education and experience.
- Possession of a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designation may substitute for the required education and experience.
- Possession of a Graduate-Degree in Business Administration, Economics, or similar field.
- Three (3) years of experience in evaluating investment managers in public equity, fixed income, or private market strategies.
- Three (3) years of relevant investment experience as described under minimum qualifications #2.
- Possession or in the process of completing a Certified Public Accountant license, the Chartered Financial Analyst program, and/or a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst program.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire: (Weight: Qualifying)

Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation: (Weight: 100%)

A passing score must be achieved on the Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation in order to be ranked on the eligible list.

A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates.
