POSITION DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision, performs skilled worked identifying, installing, maintaining, adjusting, repairing, fabricating, rebuilding and replacing look cylinders, combination locks and other institutional hardware. The essential functions of this class include:
Identifies, installs, maintains, adjusts, repairs, fabricates, rebuilds, rekeys, replaces, lock cylinders, high security lock cylinders, jail locks and related hardware also services, safe locks and changes safe combinations, installing and servicing ADA door openers and doors controls, responds to afterhours emergencies and overtime as needed;
Uses hand and power tools to open, fabricate, install, or repair locks;
Installs, adjusts, services, and repairs exit door hardware, hinges, overhead and floor closers, door hold-opens, coordinators, and mechanical, electric and electronic access controls;
Opens locks when keys or combinations are inoperable and extracts foreign objects from keyholes;
Selects key blanks, using knowledge of key codebook, to fabricate or duplicate keys;
Devises and installs master key systems by numeric progression to create levels of security;
Maintains key records and security of duplicate keys using master key system;
Communications orally and in writing to explain methods and procedures related to locksmith operations, work requests and supplied needed;
Uses a two-way radio, cell phone;
Maintains a clean working environment in the shop and mobile van;
Drives an automobile van, or light truck to various locations to provide locksmith service;
Uses a personal computer to store, retrieve key codes in database, to keep inventory of supplies, prepare reports of time worked, materials, to communicate via email, memoranda, and handheld programming device to create access control;
Performs related duties as required.
NATURE OF WORK: This position requires considerable bending, kneeling, crouching, and lifting of objects up to 51Ibs. This position also requires lifting and moving doors weighing up to 120 Ibs using lifting equipment and the ability to precisely work with objects 1/8" in diameter.
Four  years of journey level verifiable experience as locksmith
Possession and maintenance of a valid class C drivers license and good driving record
1] A valid out of state driver's license is acceptable during the application process. A valid California driver's license must be obtained prior to appointment and maintained throughout employment.
2] One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hours work week.) Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight: MQSQ Qualifying)
Applicants will be prompted to complete a supplemental questionnaire as part of the online employment application. It is essential that applicants provide complete information in identifying their education, experience, training and/or licensure, consistent with the information provided on their application. The supplemental questionnaire will be used to evaluate whether applicants meet the minimum qualifications for this position. Applicants must also complete the official application. Oral/Performance Examination: (Weight: 100%) Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an Oral/Performance Examination to determine their relative knowledge, skills and abilities in job-related areas for the 7342 classification which may include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of design and construction of locks and related hardware; tools and equipment used in locksmith work; key code systems to generate master keys; and safety procedures such as occupational hazards and procedure for accident prevention. Ability to promote, establish, and maintain effective working relationships; to write and speak in a manner that is easily understood, and listen to and understand instruction; operate a two-way radio, cell phone and pager; to use a personal computer; lift doors that weigh up to120 pounds with assistance; use hand and power tools; possess visual acuity necessary to see inside a dark cylinder or to see a pin that is less than 1/8 inch in diameter.
Date of Oral/Performance Examination: Only those applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be notified of the exact date, time and place to report to the written examination.
Certification: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Three Scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of 12 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director. Upon approval of the Human Resource Director (see Civil Service Rule 111A.26.5), the eligible list/score report resulting from this announcement may be used by other departments that also use this classification or a similar classification.
