Project: Corrosion Control Engineering and Inspection Services
The purpose of this project is to address corrosion issues occurring within Hetch Hetchy, City Distribution Division, Water Supply and Treatment Division, and Wastewater infrastructure. Work includes performing annual or bi-annual corrosion condition assessment surveys of cathodically protected (CP) and Non-CP pipelines; adjusting and balancing CP rectifiers; applying risk management principles for transmission pipelines; investigating, identifying and developing mitigation methods for interference sources; identifying principals of operation and maintenance for corrosion control; and developing resources to manage corrosion issues related to testing and operation of cathodic protection systems.
Under general direction from the Design Section Manager, the Assistant Engineer for the corrosion group assists in professional corrosion engineering work in the field and office and oversees the work of technicians, inspectors, surveyors and consultants engaged in corrosion engineering design and construction projects. The candidate shall possess knowledge of coating and lining materials selection, electrical continuity, electrical and mechanical isolation, and design of sacrificial and impressed current cathodic protection system to protect Hetch Hetchy, City Distribution Division, Water Supply and Treatment Division and Wastewater infrastructure. The candidate shall have working knowledge and experience in setting up remote monitoring units used for monitoring, control, and interruption of rectifiers within the cathodic protection system.
The essential functions of the Assistant Engineer in the corrosion group includes:
Maintaining cathodic protection databases with location and maintenance requirements
Preparing engineering designs, drawings, specifications, technical reports and other documentation
Preparing cost and quantity estimates for necessary labor, materials and equipment associated with construction, installation, repair, restoration and maintenance of cathodic protection components
Reviewing existing conditions and conducting studies (identifying, obtaining, and analyzing samples and data)
Analyzing and resolving problems to ensure compliance with regulatory and performance standards
Performing corrosion control design reviews for pipelines, reservoirs, pumping plants, and other major infrastructure projects
Verifying quantities, dimensions, safety requirements, and quality of work for corrosion protection of infrastructure
Supervising the preparation of detailed engineering drawings, specifications and calculations
Assigning and reviewing the work of subordinate staff and consultants; working with other project team members in the research, evaluation, recommendation and design of corrosion control measures
Verifying quantities, dimensions, safety requirements, and quality of work for corrosion protection of infrastructure
Providing engineering support to operations staff
Conducting meetings and making presentations.
Construction support includes reviewing and approving submittals, responding to RFI’s and reviewing change order requests.
Class 5203 performs other related duties as required.
Nature of Work
The work will require field investigations that includes the following physical activities: crawling, stooping, climbing ladders and entering confined spaces, such as large diameter pipes, construction support and any other related work. The person will report to SFPUC main office building at 525 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco, CA and will travel to the Hetch Hetchy region on an assignment basis. Overnight stays may be required.

1. A. Possession of a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree from an engineering program with a major in the Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Structural Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or Engineering Management
B. One (1) year of verifiable professional engineering experience performing at least three of the following tasks:
a. Preparing or assisting in preparing studies, designs, drawings, sketches, and plans using AutoCAD and other software tools
b. Collecting data to assess project needs and define project scope through site visits, surveying, review of existing documents, reports, drawing and manuals, performing measurements, collecting samples, or/and interviews with the stakeholders.
c. Preparing or assisting in the preparation of contract specifications, lists of materials, cost estimates, schedules, and progress payments.
d. Preparing or assisting in the preparation of engineering reports and reports concerning field conditions, the progress of projects, the results of studies, and other matters.
e. Conducting data analyses and mathematical calculations, in order to determine type or size of material or equipment.
f. Conducting routine field inspections of construction and repair projects in progress to ensure conformance with plans, specifications and codes; checks and records work progress at various construction sites.
Note: Internships, drafting experience and student design work do not qualify as professional engineering experience.
C. Possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate issued by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).
2. Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license in the field required for each specialty from the California Board of Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
