APPOINTMENT TYPE:  Permanent - Exempt.   The San Francisco General Services Agency of Public Works has an opening for an exempt appointment in San Francisco.  The position is excluded by the Charter from competitive civil service examination process.  The successful candidate shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.  This position is funded by the Public Health & Safety Bond Program, the Earthquake Emergency Response Bond Program and PUC Sewer System Improvement Program with an anticipated duration of up to three (3) years.  We are recruiting for a full-time 5266-Architectectural Associate II, Job Captain, with the ability to provide technical and/or design work for various projects including our OSHPD Projects at SFGH, Recreations Centers for Rec & Park, Public Utilities Commission and/or Emergency Services & Emergency Response Bond Projects, including but not limited to renovations and seismic upgrades as necessary. 

San Francisco Public Works, Building Design & Construction (BDC) division is a full service Professional Architectural office that provides Architectural services to City agencies in San Francisco.  BDC is one of the few City Departments in the State of California that provide full Architectural design services.  Our work includes Civic building projects such as Fire Houses, Libraries, Recreation Buildings, Parks, Public Safety buildings, Transportation and Health Services buildings.  We are proud to be providing full service design and construction for our great city.  BDC currently has an opening for position classified as 5266 Architectural Associate II, intermediate technical architect & job captain.

We are seeking motivated candidates for this position with a focus on strong construction document and technical experience and is highly qualified in REVIT.  The successful candidate should have expertise in projects of all sizes to assume project design responsibility for planning, development and execution of planning & technical documentation, including consultant coordination.  Assignments will include work on OSHPD Projects, Public Utilities Commission (PUC) Projects and/or essential services buildings for the San Francisco Fire and Police Departments.  Projects may include; design and construction of new facilities and/or comprehensive renovations of existing facilities.   

Under the direction of senior Architecture Management, the focus of the Architectural Associate II will be Architectural Production & Project Delivery.  The Architectural Associate II will be responsible for performing a variety of difficult tasks and responsible architectural duties which include, but are not limited to:

 1. Receives instruction on specific assignment objectives, complex features and possible solutions and independently performs assignments.  Sets the overall strategy for producing the documents and identifies the content of the deliverables for each stage of the work. 

2. Prepares and supervises the preparation of preliminary plans and detailed drawings for a wide variety of complex construction, adaptive reuse of historic buildings and/or seismic upgrades projects.

3. Develops finished designs of small to medium sized projects and portions of designs for highly complex projects.

4. Prepares and assists in the preparation of contract specifications for various projects; coordinates design activities with those responsible for the structural, mechanical and electrical design phases of such projects; participates in conferences and discussions with representatives of City departments and outside organizations relative to design, specifications, and functional use problems.

5. REVIT Coordination on building projects.

6. Provides preliminary Code & ADA analysis summaries for a project, including Exiting Diagrams for Construction Documents.

7. Executes the designed scope and facilitate approvals with the team.  Assists on the communication between consultants such as architects, engineers, interior lighting consultants, construction personnel and/or subcontractors, and other consultants as applicable.

8. Makes field inspections during construction and prepares drawings for buildings for approval by regulatory agencies; Assist in administration of construction contracts by attending on-site visits, field reviews and project meetings; Prepare and coordinate the review of contractor’s schedules, submission of shop drawings and samples; Provide technical support and project communications to team as required.

9. Responds to RFI’s and checks shop drawings and material samples proposed for substitution to determine if contract specifications are in compliance.

10. Assists in the development and advancement of junior staff members through coaching, training and effective supervision

Minimum Qualifications

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification.  Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.


Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Architecture or an architecture related field such as Environmental Design or Interior Architecture, or a professional degree in Architecture (Bachelor of Architecture or Master of Architecture) from an accredited college or university.


Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in the architectural field, including architectural design, architectural detailing, structural analysis, cost analysis, specification preparation, coordination and review, construction administration, and field observation of architectural construction projects, all under the direction of a licensed architect. Two (2) years must have been served as a job captain, project lead, or in a role of increased responsibility on a project. (Experience in a lower-level class (i.e., 5260, 5261, or 5265) is considered qualifying.)

License and Certification:

Possession of a valid California driver’s license.


  • 8+ years of relevant project delivery experience with a strong background in construction documents and construction administration for multiple building typologies of varying scale.
  • Proven track record of construction documents & construction administration on at least (3) built projects over $10 Million.
  • Working knowledge of Construction Types I through V and experience with projects in the Bay Area and/or an area which is a Seismic Zone 4.
  • A working knowledge of San Francisco & California Building Codes.
  • Excellent communication and writing abilities.
  • Supervisory experience over drafting and/or support staff and a clear understanding of the importance of efficient and disciplined project delivery to keep projects and fees within budget.
  • LEED professional accreditation preferred.
  • Highly skilled in REVIT with an Autodesk REVIT training Certificate and at least 4+ years of experience.
  • Proficiency in AUTOCAD.  Demonstrated by a least 5 years of experience.
  • Skilled in Sketch-Up and Photoshop
  • Ability to quickly generate hand drawn details a plus
