APPOINTMENT TYPE:  Permanent-Exempt. The Office of the City Administrator - Public Works has an opening for an exempt appointment in San Francisco. The position is excluded by the Charter from competitive civil service examination process. The successful candidate shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer. This position is anticipated to have a duration of up to three (3) years.

JOB DESCRIPTION:  Under general direction, will assist Electrical Engineering in performing difficult technical engineering/drafting work CADD/REVIT related to Electrical Engineering for Building Facilities Projects.  This position will also work with members of Mechanical, Architectural, Structural Section Staff and DPW Program Managers. This position may also interact with members of other agencies/private utilities as needed.

Under general direction, essential functions of the Engineering Associate-I include: Preparing engineering drawings and other graphic material using manual drafting methods, computer-aided drafting (Auto-CAD) and REVIT, and other software tools; checking for accuracy and compliance with drafting standards; checking drafting work of others; conducting field investigation and gathering, preparing and maintaining data, records and reports for the preparation of designs and drawings; making preliminary checks and reviewing drawings to assure accuracy, engineering sufficiency and conformance to specifications; assisting in the preparation of cost and quantity estimates for engineering projects; processing contractor construction shop submittals through logging, transcribing and filing of materials; indexing, reproducing and maintaining files, drawings and computer data bases; making trigonometric and other mathematical computations in the course of drafting work; operating and performing minor maintenance on equipment to produce drawings and other documents; responding orally to inquiries and requests for information from the general public, contractors and other agencies; supervising by planning, assigning, scheduling, overseeing and evaluating the work of subordinate employees; performing design work using engineering knowledge and appropriate software packages; learning new drafting systems and standards as necessary; preparing memos, engineering and field reports, and letters; driving a vehicle to and from work sites.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Four years of verifiable engineering drafting experience using computer-aided drafting (specifically AutoCAD) and manual drafting to prepare engineering drawings and other engineering graphic material, at least two years of which must have been in a position with duties comparable to those of class 5362 Engineering Assistant. This experience must have been obtained within the last 7 years. AND

2. Possession of a current valid driver’s license; and maintain a satisfactory driving record.

Substitution: Candidates may substitute possession of a Certificate of Completion in drafting or Computer Aided Drafting from an accredited college or technical/vocational school for 6 months of the four years of required experience

Desirable Qualifications:

Knowledge of: The Engineering Associate-I position requires knowledge of methods of engineering; construction, maintenance, and repair methods and procedures for electrical work; research techniques, drafting techniques. 

Ability to: The Engineering Associate-I shall possess ability to prepare engineering designs, plans, details, and drawings manually or using AutoCAD; perform mathematical calculations; gather data for analysis; use engineering computer software; maintain an effective working relationship with a variety of people; communicate effectively orally and in writing; understand, explain, and apply pertinent laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances.

Selection Plan

Candidates meeting the minimum requirements are not guaranteed advancement to the selection process.
Application will be reviewed and assessed for relevant qualifying experience (see Application Procedure above). 

Only those applicants who most closely meet the needs of the department will be invited to participate in the interview process. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed an invitation to interview. Qualified applicants who are selected for an interview will be notified of the exact date, time, and place of the interview.

Disaster Service Workers
