The following information describes the civil service classification for which applications are being solicited.

The purpose of this announcement is to fill a vacant position in this classification.

APPOINTMENT TYPE: Permanent Exempt, Full Time not to exceed three (3) years – This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under supervision of the Senior Transit Traffic Checker, performs a variety of passenger, vehicle and pedestrian checks and surveys; computes and summarizes findings; follows established methods and procedures in making a variety of transit and related traffic checks; and performs related duties as required.

 

Nature of Work: Incumbents are required to work outside in inclement weather; work rotating shifts; nights and weekends including holidays; work alone during early morning and late night at various locations throughout the City; and stand, sit or ride on public transit for extended periods of time.  Incumbents will be required to use a hand-held computer.  Schedules are changed on a daily basis.  Days off are subject to change.  A tour of duty is eight hours of work completed within a maximum of thirteen consecutive hours in a twenty-four hour period.

 

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Performs passenger checks, running time and terminal checks.
  • Boards vehicles to determine running time between terminals, exact time at each stop and ratio of standing to moving time, exact time at all time points, speed of vehicle, and number of passengers.
  • Assists schedule makers to investigate complaints from patrons and operators; distributes notices to the public covering changes of service or new types of service.
  • Tabulates figures from traffic checks.
  • Responds to inquiries from general public.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Two years of verifiable experience in a clerical position with major duties in computing mathematical data; OR
  2. One year of verifiable experience in the transportation field in driving or information services.

Notes:

1.       Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

2.       One year full-time experience is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week.). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time experience.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.

  • Knowledge of SFMTA/Muni transit systems.
  • Ability to complete simple arithmetical computations accurately; write figures legible; input and transmit data accurately using a hand-held computer; communicate information in a manner that is clear, concise and effective; and establish and maintain courteous and effective communications with others.
  • Ability to read maps and to locate destinations along the SFMTA/Muni transit system.

VERIFICATION:

Written verification (proof) of qualifying experience must verify that the applicant meets the minimum qualifications stated on the announcement. Conviction History

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

Benefits

All employees hired on or after January 10, 2009 will be required (pursuant to San Francisco Charter Section A8.432) to contribute 2% of pre-tax compensation to fund retiree healthcare. In addition, most employees are required to make a member contribution towards retirement, ranging from 7.5%-13.25% of compensation.
