The mission of the San Francisco Department of Elections (Department) is to provide election-related services to all City residents and to conduct elections that are free, fair, and functional. Serving more than 500,000 registered voters, the Department administers elections in an open and transparent manner, making a concerted effort at all times to inspire public confidence in the integrity of elections in the City.
In preparation for the November 3, 2020, General Election, the Department is seeking applications for seasonal positions of roving Field Election Deputies (FEDs) to provide support to poll workers at 588 polling places on Election Day.
FEDs serve from 4 a.m. to approximately midnight, first visiting and confirming polling places are set up and opened on time, then monitoring procedural compliance and ensuring poll workers are carrying out their tasks properly and following health and safety protocols. Each FED is responsible for a territory of approximately 7 to 10 polling places and is provided with a van. To prepare for Election Day, FEDs must complete several training sessions.
Applicants must have a valid California driver's license and a clean DMV record.
POSITION SCHEDULE AND HOURS
This is a short-term assignment (approximately 31 hours), that includes completion of mandatory training sessions and performing FED duties on Election Day. There may be additional elections tasks and projects available, in which case individuals in these positions will be offered to work additional hours.
Following is training and assignment schedule:
- Online 2-hour training course detailing poll worker duties – must be completed between October 1 – October 9, 2020
- Zoom 3-hour training course detailing FED duties – must be completed on one of the three available dates:
- Saturday, October 10, 12pm - 3pm (times may change)
- Sunday, October 11, 12pm - 3pm (times may change)
- Wednesday, October 14, 12pm - 3pm (times may change)
- Saturday, October 10, 12pm - 3pm (times may change)
- In person 2-hour training lab focusing on operating voting equipment – must be completed between October 17 – October 23, 2020
- In person 4-hour route driving of the territory assigned on Election Day - Saturday, October 31, 10am - 2pm
- In person 20-hour Election Day assignment - Tuesday, November 3, 4am – midnight
(overtime hours will be paid at 1.5 the hourly rate).
This is a temporary exempt as-needed position. Temporary exempt as-needed employees who have worked more than 1040 hours in any consecutive 12 month period, and whose normal work week at the time of inclusion in the system is not less than 20 hours are eligible for health coverage and retirement benefits. - Voters are offered materials and assistance that allow them to independently cast a secret ballot free from intimidation
- All election laws are upheld, and procedures are consistently followed.
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.
Six (6) months of clerical experience including preparing and maintaining a variety of records and/or documents, filing, use of office equipment, public contact and processing of incoming and outgoing mail.
Any one of the following may substitute for the required experience:
Completion of 15 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework from an accredited college or university; OR
Completion of a clerical training program (240 hours); OR
Completion of an approved City and County of San Francisco Clerical Administrative training program (as designated on the job announcement).

Disaster Service Workers
All employees hired on or after January 10, 2009 will be required (pursuant to San Francisco Charter Section A8.432) to contribute 2% of pre-tax compensation to fund retiree healthcare.
