The mission of the San Francisco Department of Elections’ (Department) is to conduct all public federal, state, district and municipal elections in a manner that is free, fair, and functional.
The Department follows rules and regulations established by federal, state, and local laws, including the Voting Rights Act, the Help America Vote Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the City’s Language Access Ordinance. To inspire confidence in the integrity of the elections processes, the Department operates in an open and transparent manner.
The Department is seeking applications for several positions in the Campaign Services division. Individuals in these positions will provide election information to candidates, campaigns, and the public. Individuals will serve as the public face of the Department and must be able to provide accurate election information in a clear, concise, and professional manner.
The ideal candidate is reliable, a team-player, and has meaningful experience learning new subject matter quickly and communicating that information to a public audience.
This position requires someone with excellent written and verbal communication skills, and demonstrated abilities to work on several tasks or projects simultaneously while meeting applicable deadlines.
Tasks and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
- Providing election information in person to visitors at the Department’s front counter, through email and over the phone
- Assisting customers with utilization of the Department’s website and online tools and filing paperwork.
- Assess candidate and ballot measure filing paperwork
- Respond to campaign inquiries and/or redirect them to the appropriate personnel when needed
- Provide observers escort
- Assist with various clerical tasks such as filing and scanning.
Temporary exempt as-needed appointment not to exceed six (6) months or 1040 hours. Exempt employees are considered "at will" and serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.
Duration of Work/Work Schedule
This is a seasonal position, beginning on or around July 1, 2019. A successful candidate will have the opportunity to assist with various election projects for the November 2019 and March 2020 election cycles, approximately through April 2020.
Weekly hours will generally range between 25 and 40, usually between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, but some paid evening and weekend overtime hours will likely be required. Working overtime is common during an election cycle, especially before, on, and after Election Day; the person in this position may occasionally work 60-70 hours per week.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English and Spanish with a high command of English.
- Recent and successful experience in customer service, public speaking, community outreach, or teaching
- Experience with multi-tasking in a fast-paced office setting and/or call-center
- Experience with using computer software (e.g., Microsoft office, databases, Internet, etc.)
- General knowledge of San Francisco neighborhoods and districts
These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. - One (1) year (equivalent to 2000 hours) of verifiable clerical experience including preparing and maintaining a variety of records and/or documents, filing, use of office equipment, public contact and processing of incoming and outgoing mail: OR
- Six (6) months (equivalent to 1000 hours) of verifiable clerical experience as described in #1 and completion of a clerical training program (240 hours); OR
- Six (6) months (equivalent to 1000 hours) of verifiable clerical experience as described in #1 and 15 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework from an accredited college or university.

As a selected candidate for a job, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you are a selected candidate. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances, such as:
- Candidates for positions with the Unified School District and the Community College District may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under the California Education Code.
- Candidates for positions with the Recreation and Park Department may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under California Public Resources Code 5164.
Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with the City.

Disaster Service Workers
All employees hired on or after January 10, 2009 will be required (pursuant to San Francisco Charter Section A8.432) to contribute 2% of pre-tax compensation to fund retiree healthcare. In addition, most employees are required to make a member contribution towards retirement, ranging from 7.5%-13.25% of compensation.
