Appointment Type: This is a Temporary Exempt (TEX) appointment, as-needed not to exceed 36 months. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.
The San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH) is accepting applications for temporary provisional positions in class 2583 Home Health Aide.
NATURE OF POSITIONS: Shifts are variable depending on position(s). Days, Part-time, evenings, nights, weekends, rotating and/or holiday shifts may be required. Positions may be located throughout the Department of Public Health but are primarily located at Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center.
Under immediate supervision of licensed professional staff, the Home Health Aide assists clients with activities of daily living including personal hygiene, ambulation, prescribed exercises, preparing meals including therapeutic diets, and keeping client’s environment organized and neat, and performing related duties.
· Assists clients with personal hygiene including skin and mouth cleansing, hair care, and bathing;
· Assists clients in and out of bed and with ambulation;
· Assists clients with prescribed exercises as instructed by professional staff;
· Assists in keeping client environment neat, safe and organized, including changing bed linens as needed, preparing meals (including therapeutic diets), and assisting clients with eating;
· Takes client blood pressure and weighs client as assigned;
· Implements client care plans according to Home Health Agency policy;
· Communicates client needs and information relating to client care plan to professional staff;
· Adheres to Home Health Agency administrative and clinical policies and procedures;
· Implements infection control and safety policies and procedures according to established guidelines;
· Maintains confidentiality of client information;
· Provides care in compliance with Home Health Agency, State and Federal regulations, and documents care as assigned;
· Participates in weekly case conferences related to needs assessments of clients; AND
· Assists in promoting health education for clients and client families.
The 2583 Home Health Aide also performs other related duties as assigned.
The qualified applicant pool resulting from this recruitment may be utilized to fill exempt vacancies within the San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH) in the next six months.
1. Possession of a Home Health Aide Certificate issued by the State of California; AND
2. Possession of six (6) months (equivalent to 1,000 hours) of experience performing Home Health Aide job duties in a home health care setting within the last five (5) years.
Note: One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

1. Bilingual fluency in a variety of languages depending upon the department's bilingual needs. 2. Possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association. Applicants must indicate on the application form the certifications that they possess.

Note on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Some positions in the Department of Public Health will require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to gloves, gowns, eye and face protection, and face-fitting respirators. The requirement for the use of PPE may come on short or no notice. Facial hair or any condition that interferes with a face-fitting respirator’s seal (i.e. comes between the sealing surfaces of the respirator and the wearer’s bare skin) is not permitted when face-fitting respirators are worn, including during initial or periodic respirator fit-testing.
Employees who choose not to shave and do not have either American Disabilities Act (ADA) or Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Accommodations do not have the right to alternate work assignments or the option of using a loose-fitting Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) in place of a Face Fitting Respirator.
