Position Status
Under San Francisco Charter Section 10.104, this is a Category 18 full-time, at-will, project-based appointment, which serves at the pleasure of the hiring officer. Appointments in this category shall not exceed three (3) years.

About San Francisco Connecting Children to Nature
San Francisco is part of a national initiative, Cities Connecting Children to Nature (CCCN) intended to “ensure that all children have the opportunity to play, learn and grow in nature through the endurance of systems, policies and practices across a city.” CCCN project partners, the National League of Cities, and the Children & Nature Network have chosen San Francisco as the only city on the West Coast to participate in this nationwide seven-city cohort.

San Francisco Children and Nature (SFCN) is a cross-sector collaborative which started in 2016, and which now includes more than 25 local agencies as well as other organizations, all linked together to guide coordinated planning and action through a Core Team and Work Groups. Its vision is to ensure that every child has a nature connection every day in our city. The collaborative is guided by core values of equity, the importance of nearby nature in children’s lives, and nature connection as an important source of health, well-being, and happiness in children. The collaborative strives to ensure the San Francisco Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights is realized for all children in San Francisco.

SFCN is collaboratively funded and governed through an Executive Council and Steering Committee which includes representation from the Office of Mayor Ed Lee, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, the San Francisco Unified School District, the Presidio Trust, and the YMCA of San Francisco.

About the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department
The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (SFRPD) supports, throughout San Francisco, over 220 unique park and open space sites which provide urban nature experiences and service learning opportunities to youth and adults.

Job Description
The 3374 Outreach/Community Coordinator of SFCN reports to the Steering Committee through SFRPD's Director of Volunteer and Youth Stewardship Services; provides strategic coordination and management support to the Steering Committee, as well as to other levels of SFCN's governance; facilitates cross-sector coordination of, and connects participating agencies and other organizations to meet, strategic goals set forth by the collaborative; and connects collaborating agencies, as well as other organizations, to opportunities that equitably advance the Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights and cultivate youth engagement in natural settings, stewardship, and place-based environmental education.

Essential Functions
The 3374 Outreach/Community Coordinator of SFCN must perform three major functions:

Administrative and Coordination Support:
  1. Coordinate and administer goals set by the Steering Committee and local collaborative;
  2. Coordinate multiple levels of governance within collective impact framework;
  3. Manage budget and identify fundraising opportunities;
  4. Work with stakeholders to develop strategic objectives and initiatives which further advance the collaborative’s vision and goals; and 
  5. Oversee, monitor and coordinate a results-based accountability approach to measure impact of the initiative.

Project and Programmatic Management:
  1. Coordinate with stakeholder staff on implementation of the initiative’s strategic plan;
  2. Oversee and deliver resources as needed;
  3. Document outcomes and relevant reporting metrics;
  4. Research and communicate best practices with nature connection elements in capital improvements; and 
  5. Provide other specific support for the initiative as needed.

Communication & Outreach:
  1. Communicate regularly with stakeholder groups and committees through needed channels;
  2. Communicate vision, mission and goals in presentations and program delivery;
  3. Track and coordinate key outreach events and support program days as needed;
  4. Process incoming inquiries and collateral messaging;
  5. Manage contact inventory of all stakeholders; and 
  6. Provide content for production of outreach resources as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; AND
  2. One year (2000 hours) of experience supervising, coordinating or directing volunteer services and/or community outreach services in an organization which provides services to the public.

Education Substitution:  Additional experience supervising, coordinating or directing volunteer and/or community relations services, as described above, may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the required baccalaureate degree on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable Qualifications
  1. Experience with cross-sector collaboration and collective impact;
  2. Core values of equity, nearby nature in children’s lives, and meeting needs of children through nature connection; 
  3. Familiarity with the culture and history of San Francisco and its built and natural environment;
  4. Two (2) to three (3) years of relevant work experience working with youth initiatives; with adults and youth engagement; 
  5. Two (2) years experience of collaborative management, goal setting and project implementation including technical, social, community and organizational aspects; 
  6. Two (2) to three (3) years of experience supervising, coordinating or directing outreach services to the public sector;
  7. Organized, strategic and analytical thinker with strong attention to detail;
  8. Excellent written and verbal communications, including public speaking;
  9. Strong interpersonal and networking skills;
10. Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills;
11. Ability to follow direction and take initiative as needed;
12. Ability to work in a fast paced outdoor environment and able to lift 25 pounds from floor to table height; and

Selection Procedures

The selection process will include evaluation of applications and relevant qualifying experience. Only those applicants who most closely meet the needs of the collaborative will be invited to advance in the selection process. The department may administer additional selection procedures to make final hiring decisions, which may consist of an oral interview and/or performance exercise.

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed any advancement into the selection process.

Conviction History
